So...Im not much of a rifle guy. Which is why I only have a few.

I have a mosin, nothing fancy. Fine shooter with a full can of ammo in supply for it. Im not looking for far distances (think 200yds max). Would my mosin fill that role fine or would going 308/other cal a better choice? Id prefer not to get too oddball cals...my 460/10mm are hard enough to find ammo.

Ive been wanting a 308, but may wait to get a semi auto when I flee the state. Wasnt sure if it might be worthwhile to go more modern on my centerfire rifle. Other than my 1974 30-30.

Purpose will be first line of defense against bearded goat fuckers.

Thoughts on rifles and/or cals?

If you want a 308 get a 308. For zero to 200 defense any cartridge based upon the 308/ 30-06 case will work.

If you can buy from the CMP get a CMP service grade special in 308. You have a semi auto that is legal in all 50 states that is chambered in 308 and can reach out past 1000 yards.

For a bolt gun in 308 win I really I the feel of the Ruger Gunsite Scout! I force myself to not pick it up when I see one at a Show or LGS!!

Two favorites for me:
1) Remington 700 Police. It is already pillared, glass bedded, and floated from the factory. I want to say they are $650 or so? I think that's what I paid each for my two.
2) Civilian Marksmanship Program. Camp Perry is in Ohio, Fort Anniston is in Alabama. I haven't been to Perry, but Anniston took me maybe 3 hours from Atlanta. They also do online sales. I have the M1 Garand in Field Grade (2 Garand units and 2 of the carbines) and I think I paid $495 each. I went there with a head space tool (Midway USA for like $25) and picked the 2 I wanted out of walls full of them (hundreds and hundreds of units). NOTE: If you want a round fairly compatible to 308 and want something really nice for a decent price - find a nice Gewehr-43 or Mauser Karabiner 98K. The easiest way to get an epic Mauser is from Mitchell's Mausers. Go with Souvenir grade or Collector grade. Fine Historical & Modern Firearms such as Mauser Rifles, P-08 Luger Pistols, P38 Autos, 1911 Autos and more by Mitchell\'s Mausers

I think for any defensive use you would better off with a semi auto but a lever gun would be a suitable alternative. However if the Mosin is what you have then it will serve. Focus on rifle marksmanship with the Mosin for a while, see what you can do with it. I myself am lacking a bolt gun and I want to fix that. I'm kinda hankering for a CZ 527 carbine in 7.62x39 but I also kinda want to get back in the milsurps game with a Lee Enfield or a K31, both of which I've had in the past. Ammo availability is always a pain though. Mosins are still good for that.

I have the Mosberg MVP Scout it came with a Vortex Scout scope it a sweet shooter.
My buddy bought this one and shoot quarter size groups with it. He put a nice
Viper HST 6-24x50
scope on it

I have a Savage 11FL that I got new in 1999. That thing shoots like a dream and it was really accurate out of the box. I don't have any experience with the new accu-trigger though.

There are a LOT of choices out there. MANY fine rifles to choose from... Savage, Remington, Sako, CZ, Tikka, Bergara, Howa, Weatherby, etc.
Remington and Savage is going to have the larger aftermarket accessories if you wish to trick-out your rifle down the road.

You will have to determine what is best suited for your needs/wants & your wallet. Do some research & visit the LGS and handle a couple to see what feels good in your hands. I may like a Savage 10fcp-sr, but you may prefers something different. it's cool, everyone is different.

I have the Mosin 91/30 & M44. They are fun range rifles. But I don't expect them to get a tight group like my hunting rifles...
1.) because of my old eyes w/ iron sights 2.) worn out surplus rifle. They are what they are.

I also like the .308 caliber because of it's versatility.
