Safe Storage Precautions / Requirements

So, I live with someone who is technically on ADD meds. Or rather, will be starting to take ADD meds.

My firearms are normally always locked up in a safe. That safe contains no ammo. The keys are secured both in a concealed location, and inside a small safe with a combo lock on it to prevent access to the keys.

Are there any safe storage requirements for ammo, such as locking it, if the ammo is in the same room as the safe -- while living with a person that "may" be prohibited?

To be fair, I highly doubt "ADD meds" are a prohibiting factor. That being said, it's still a controlled substance and I don't want problems.

I double checked, and I have locks actually on all the boxes that contain ammo already. I had a few without locks, but they're empty boxes.

I don't have a separate room to really keep the ammo, but both are locked in separate containers.

The gun safe is steel, while the ammo boxes are plastic. Both are inaccessible normally without tampering.

These days you would probably get in as much trouble for the ammo as the guns. In an emergency both are worthless if you can't get them quickly, so weigh the risks. Sounds like you are making more than a reasonable effort on safety.

ADHD ADD whatever... Is this person prone to violence, or has this person exhibited self harm or harm to others behavior? You do realize that is not a part of ADHD or ADD patient profiles in all. And is more associated with the hypertensive behavior, not the attention deficit... And there's actually a low incidence of actual violence, but the agressive behaviour is unduly misunderstood... Again... Has this person exhibited violent behavior towards self or others? Stigma is a terrible thing, and so are labels. Just because a diagnosis of having ADD or ADHD is present does not automate a propensity to violence!

What is your problem? I didn't say anything bad about people with ADHD or ADD.

This is all about the bullshit policies of this state I have to deal with. It has nothing to do with shitting on these people.

And quite frankly, SCOTUS rulings have already addressed rendering firearms inoperative within the home!

A law written in conflict and violation with the Constitution is not a law at all...

It is also unenforceable... And is only in place to use as a tool to punish and burden firearm owners! For example, are all kitchens in the same home devoid of knives? Are controls on cooking apparatus locked out? Are all chemicals in the home safely secured? How about strings on blinds? ... I could go on forever how arbitrary any such reference of safety only addressing firearms is ridiculous and utterly capricious.

I didn't mean to have any bad blood spilt here, so everyone calm down, lol. I did though want to bring attention to the unfortunate ridiculousness of such legislation. Secondly, if that person(s) are not a threat, have not exhibited violent behavior, there really is no reason to stigmatize and stereotype the person(s) as being violent because of a condition that is for the most part not associated with violent behavior. Check you fire and put away the anxiety! Heaven forbid something did happen in a rare example, you'll never get a doctor to testify that ADHD is an automatic diagnosis of propensity to violent behavior... Ever! So I fail to understand having any anxiety about locking things up, separate, etc.

In medical studies violent behavior was exhibited in patients (adult) with severe ADHD and co-morbidity's such as Anxiety and usually substance abuse... And these behaviors were well established, not something that just popped up magically, ie the adult part...

Again, there's a lot of stigmatic stereotypical assumptions about people who have ADHD that are completely incorrect!

I mean do you think you'll get a knock at the door and there's LE there asking to inspect your home because they were notified that a person in the home was diagnosed with ADHD and they also have the residence as recoded location for firearms? Hahahahaha

I'd shit my pants right there laughing so hard as I close the door in their face... Making sure they heard me tell them come back with a warrant! Not to be rude, but have a nice day!

I forgot and do hope that people realize that ADD and ADHD can be two different things.

Honestly I do understand having a concern, but like any medical condition, it's individual diagnosis. And if the person has not exhibited any violent behavior, there really is no issue.

As far as I can find the only thing Cuomo has signed was in 2019 saying shit needs to be locked up if kids 16 and under are living at the place, or someone 16 and under would have access or something stupid like that..

My understanding is it's recommended for safety, but it never says "required." I don't see a reference to it in the penal code. Still, I threw some locks on there while I investigated.

By the time they are far enough in your home to check for locks they have already decided whether they are going to find something or not.

If they have decided to find something, they will, no matter how careful you are.

If they aren't determined to find something, they are going to overlook anything as BS as safe storage crap.

My wife is open to moving to PA. This is a recent development. Pending what her company says, I'm out maybe in a year or two. (Fingers crossed before she changes her mind.)

As far as I know there is no requirement to secure a handgun in any situation where a long gun would not also have to be secured.

If this guy decided to buy his own shotgun, would he need his own safe for it, because yours has to be inaccessible to him ?

They also recommend you don’t have firearms so what’s that tell you.
My guns are locked up because my kids are 15 and 17 and it’s just a good idea. When both my kids are older most guns will be locked up but my pistol and mags will be on my nightstand table.
My son has adhd and has never shown anything that would concern me regarding firearm safety. He likes guns but listens to what I tell him. Same with my older son. Most of my ammo is locked up in a cabinet but not all of it. I have plenty of mags stuffed with hollow points in my sock drawer for my self defense pistols. Plenty of my pistols are locked, loaded, and ready to fire in my safes. While at my parents property I think nothing of handing either one of my kids a gun to shoot. Both are 100% safe 100% of the time.
My oldest son is super safe and I’m thinking or getting him a “small” gun to have with him at my parents property. He shoots anything I hand him except AR’s. Too loud and doesn’t like the noise since a guy at the range had them. Oh well.
