AKs?Not saigas
A quick ammo caliber lesson
7.62x25 - called Tokarov, a pistol cartridge
7.62x39 - sometimes combined with "Russian", the AK cartridge, a rifle caliber similar to the 30-30 in power, but NOT the same
7.62x51 - .308 Win or NATO, common U.S. round
7.62x54r- another communist bloc caliber, similar to our .30-06, but NOT the same. These are for the Mosin-Nagant rifle, Dragunov sniper rifle. The "R" at the end stands for rimless.
There may be more, but these are the most common. Confusing? Wait 'til we talk 9mm!

A 7.62x39 = 30-30 but not the same. Can you explain more on that please
AKs?
Proofread, proofread, proofread! Damn autocorrect!I think you mean rimmed speaking of 7.62 x 54 R. They have a big honking rim..heh
Thanks for the lesson

Similar not the same
7.62x39 123gr Federal Fusion = 2,350fps / 1,508ftlbs
30-30 170gr Remington Exprese = 2,200fps / 1,827ftlbs
And back to the original question, Saigas are AK based so they are highly reliable and fairly easy to maintain. Big problem now, because of sanctions imposed by the Obama administration and furthered by the current administration, they are not being imported into the U.S. anymore. Values have skyrocketed and continue to rise.
??
Ok missing that . . .
What caliber do you think you want?
If you want the AK platform x39 is the way to go. There are several other options available if .308 cal. is the priority. But I am a caliber purist.Boo bummer button about Obama’s stopping the imports making the prices jump.
Which caliber is a tough question now. I was thinking the 7.62x39 as it seems to be cheaper and more easily to find. But now you say 308 is more versatile, longer range, more bullet weights and styles. So much confusion for me.
I don’t hunt but every once in awhile a friend asks me to take out some woodchucks and has mentioned coyotes also. Mostly this is wanted(not really needed) for defense.

You can always go to the reliability of the SKS it's in your caliber you can change stocks you could change mag's easy-to-use and maintain price is responsible and won't lose value parts are plentiful !It’s not so much that I want a AK platform. I want a reliable semi-auto rifle larger than a 5.56 that I don’t have to mutate. So far that’s either a M1 Garand (don’t like how you load it), M1a(big $) or a Saiga. If you know of other options please let me know.
Thanks for all this help
