Well my Ohaus made in China RCBS scale went belly up. I keep it in the original box and take it out only when I use it. Wouldn't hold a zero, I can't figure it out because it isn't even consistently wrong enough to figure an explanation. I've got an old Pacific for back up and it holds close enough for .45ACP's. Damn!

I take it that it's electric? If so try changing out the battery's.

No, I don't trust the electric ones, I like to see an actual balanced response, and I weight every load. It is an RCBS 505 beam scale. I'm buying a Hornady Lock and Load beam scale.

Clean the pivoting points. There is nothing there to break.

I would take the pan and beam off and clean everything. There might be a little funk - dust, oxidation, etc. - in the pivot, as stated above.

I did all that and more. I think it is something in the magnetic damper. When I use the elevating screw to bring the base up to the beam and zero it, the beam will actually rise on it own. If I manually place the beam at zero it will stay and shift maybe a tenth or so but when I tap the bowl it will not return to zero. I still have the original paperwork and went through it and re checked everything. there is no 'troubleshooting' section.

Try to place it in a different area, maybe there is a magnetic field somewhere.

Maybe some static at work? Wipe down with a dryer sheet. Look at the knife edges for a shiny spot and redress them and try again. Clean the balance points. Grasp at straws...

I haven't tried the dryer sheet but I have tried all the other suggestions. It is baffling because it has been sitting apart in the original box, unmolested, in its place on a shelf where it always sits between reloading sessions. Without knowing for sure what the problem is and having a reasoned solution, I cannot ever trust it again to give me consistent, accurate readings. Kind of like the current state of affairs in our country.
