So my wife ordered herself a new deer rifle online (another story), she chose a local FFL to receive it, and when it arrived she contacted the dealer to pick it up. We made arrangements to do so.
Now, this ain't my first rodeo. Come time to leave, I grab some cash from the safe, $2500 to be exact. Be prepared, that's my motto. The old golden rule, you never know what he's got on the rack til you get there.
We show up, examine her purchase, and she starts filling out the NICS paperwork. Meantime, I'm eyeballing the selection.
Then I see it. A Ruger American All-Weather (stainless steel), brand new. Stopped making them in 2016. Since I bought a new one chambered for 7mm-08 Rem in 2015, I'd always thought I'd like another for a companion rifle for it, in another short-action caliber, but the chances of finding a brand new one, I thought, were about as good as seeing God and winning the lottery on the same day. So, I casually asked, "What caliber is that Ruger on the rack?". He glanced over and said ".308 Winchester". I almost wet myself. I asked if I could look at it. He hands it to me. Tag says $450. He looks at me and tells me he's had that awhile, and he's going to sell it soon or buy it out of his own inventory. I says what do you gotta have for it, right now, cash on the barrel head. He mulls for a few secs, says $400. I said I'll take it. Had the box and all.
The only way I could have been more excited is if he woulda had an NIB Rem 700 SPS Buckmasters in 7mm-08 there. If he had, I woulda bought both on the spot.
So now, I have a set of "twins".
