Shipped a Handgun to an Out of State FFL, Putnam

I may or may not have done this without knowing for a trade and I'm just now finding out in NY I need a bill of sale to remove it from my permit. Never removed a pistol before...

I called the office and she said I needed to provide a bill of sale so I am going to make one up with my FFL information as well as the FFL I sent it to. I told her I had an FFL03 and she didn't seem to understand at all what that was, she wasn't that concerned she mostly said that she didn't want a problem when it got sent up to "them" is them Albany or judges??

At this point am I just completely fucked, I can't unsend the gun and the guy already did his 4473 on the other side.

Everything i'm reading online says even non-licensees can ship handguns legally, the way i did, UPS Air service and declare it, but nothing specifically about NY. I also find nothing online that specifically states it needs to go through a NY FFL to go out. Im really confused.

Anyone have any first hand experience or want to scold me and tell me about the jail time i'm about to face? lol

You shipped it to an out of state FFL just ask them for a receipt and a copy of their FFL and the pistol permit office will accept that I believe doesn’t have to be an FFL in ny

As above, just ask the FFL for a receipt.

Or just leave it on your permit.

Just get a receipt from the FFL it's going to like above are mentioning. You can even say you need it "for your own records" and give a copy to the PPO.

Geeee, maybe I'm just naive in this regard. But I would THINK that transfer to or via an FFL would automatically have a receipt involved...

But hey, that's just me! Just wouldn't want the thing being found at a crime scene and then me needing to explain how I sold it 10 whenever ago or to whom... If it's stocked and tagged with my name on it, and I get rid of it, it's being washed from my records!!!

The FFL I sent it to is making me up a receipt. Thanks for the replies guys, kinda running around like a chicken with my head cut off. I am just going to have a receipt with the right info, make, model, serial, type and include a copy of their FFL, which I have.

Technically there is a receipt but its part of my bound book/made out the guy I actually traded with.

If anything it's probably MORE important to your case the receiving FFL has a receipt to give you, that way it's not your word. You have proof a valid FFL received it when sent.

That's my thoughts as well. Already have the receiving FFL make up a receipt then Ill send in that with the copy of their signed FFL I got when I confirmed/sent it originally.

Yeah I think that's fine. Just get your docs in a row, and submit a copy of your own record as an FFL as well. Both copies should prove both sides of the transaction.

.... it's still your gun until it's checked in to an FFL..now it's out there floating around until who knows when the way the mail is these days

I think im hung up on the ffl03 part initially. I domt think it matters either way

Ok so as an update to this I just got off the phone with clerk. She said she was just going to put it through the way it is and told me in the future to go through a FFL and that she didn't know what would happen.

Apprently these go up to the State police before they are signed? Or go up to the state police at some time. Anyone know how that works. Just going by the paperwork itself how would they know if it was shipped or i walked into a FFL in another state and sold it directly to them.

Part of me is expecting a call from the NYSP now, but who knows.

From the anecdotal shit I've read on this and other forums I should be alright, but ill let you guys know if they break down my door for doing something legal.

If I get out on the other side of this i know one thing, im just gonna bite the bullet and ship through an ffl
