GREAT MILLS, MD (RNN) - Three people were injured at a shooting at Great Mills High School in St. Mary's County, MD, a county spokesperson told the Baltimore Sun.

Student said he didn't hear gunshots but then CNN asks him how many people were injured and he said he "heard 7" then adds he first heard it was one. Interesting implications of this kind of reporting.

2 Students, Suspect Injured in Shooting at Md. High School
The gunman entered Great Mills High School in Great Mills, Maryland, at the beginning of the school day and shot a female student in a hallway, Sheriff Tim Cameron said. A male student was also hit by a bullet.

The relationship between the students is not known at this time, Cameron said.

The shooter exchanged fire with a school resource officer on campus and was wounded, Cameron said. All three students are in critical condition, but the officer wasn’t injured. It wasn’t yet clear how the gunman was wounded.

I’m in a waiting room and “The View” is on. They mentioned the shooting for 10 seconds then went right to facebook losing 40 million dollars in 1 day. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the attack serves as "another tragic and exasperating reminder of the enduring threat of gun violence", and called upon "our so-called leaders in Washington" to take action to stem gun attacks.​

St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said the student with the handgun was declared dead at a hospital, and the other two students were in critical condition. He said the officer was not harmed.

Cameron said authorities were still investigating whether the shooter was killed by the officer.

"When the shooting took place, our school resource officer, who was stationed inside the school, was alerted to the event and the shots being fired. He pursued the shooter and engaged the shooter, during which that engagement he fired a round at the shooter," Cameron said.

As long as the gunman was stopped is all that matters. Whether the guard shot the gunman or whether the teen gunman killed himself when challenged does not matter. Either resolution is proof that an armed guard IS EFFECTIVE.

As I've told non-gun people: Sometimes no shots have to be fired in order to stop a threat. If you present a firearm and shout "Drop your gun!" (IF you're in a situation which allows for verbal interaction) and the bad guy drops to the ground, drops their weapon, runs away, or kills themselves, the threat is stopped.
