Holosuns changes are kind of simple, they just had to change the adjustment buttons,

Any changes to the magazines could kill the whole thing for HS er I mean SAI. Or in the end SAI will just end up paying some form of royalty to Sig

Interesting case. I'm not a lawyer, but from a previous job, I do know a good deal about how patents work. Sig's patents are basically for a magazine that goes from a single-stack to a double-stack with a taper, where the single stack portion holds at least 2 rounds before hitting the taper. There's a lot more to it, but those are probably the most important parts. I'm honestly surprised that there has never been a firearm magazine before that goes from a double-stack to a single stack.

If Springfield can find a past example of such a magazine, they could invalidate Sig's patent and not have to pay anyone but their lawyers. If they can't find anyting to challenge the validity of Sig's patents, they will probably have to settle or will outright lose because the claims in Sig's patents pretty damn well describe a Hellcat's magazines (and the Ruger Max9 and S&W Shield Plus' also). If Sig wins, they'll probably also go after Ruger, S&W, and maybe even the makers of the Glock 48 15-rd mags.

And no, I don't think SA losing would kill their Hellcat at all. They would end up paying Sig royalties, but I doubt the penalties would be so harsh that they would discontinue the Hellcat instead of giving Sig a cut of each one sold. Especially given how popular they are.

If they win, then yea, Sig'll probably go after Ruger and SW. But they'll probably expect the two to reach agreements with them rather than going through full-blown lawsuits. That'll all depend on the result of their suit against Springfield.
