State Compact. Anyone hear of this?

Apparently this has been going on for a while now but I'm just now hearing about this. My co-worker from CT was telling me about it at lunch because his state just passed a bill making them part of the already 10 states and DC that are part of this compact.

To sum it up if you don't feel like reading the article, it basically makes it so that if you are in this compact your state gives your electoral votes to the candidate that wins the national popular vote weather your state predominately voted for that candidate or not. So if this happened in this past election and you were in a state that was in the compact and voted for Trump your state would still have to give it's electoral votes to the piece of shit. That is scary shit right there! And guess who the states that are participating in this... California, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington and DC. I believe they need to round up enough states to come up with 270 electoral votes to make this a reality. Keep your powder dry gentlemen!

This is a way for the Liberal Progressive states to undermine the electoral college without properly amending the constitution.

Once a group of states that represent a majority of the electoral college decide to cast their electoral votes for the candidate that wins the popular vote, the electoral college will be effectively abolished and we will have exactly what the founders feared: Election of the president by popular vote.

Should this become a legitimate issue, it will need to be challenged in the Supreme Court. Although states are allowed to determine how their electors vote, throwing a state's votes to the popular vote's winner, when that candidate may not have won the state, could be viewed as disenfranchising state residents.

Yes, that does appear to be the case. But remember, hillary was going to win in a landslide.

I personally take the news and poll results with a grain of salt these days. Look at gun sales and the drop in unemployment. The press will continue to push all negative news all the time. I'm hoping they screw themselves over once again.

This is one of the things we discussed. So even if this somehow came true it would almost certainly be challenged in the courts. But we know how the courts operate...

Not necessarily. There are 12 swing states that could sign on for this. Secure those and it could be bad. It's obvious with the states that are already in the compact that this is a way for the left to try and circumvent the electoral college but my question is this. Will they follow through if this backfires and the candidate they DON'T want to win gets the popular vote? I highly doubt it. I don't think these crybabies would have accepted Trump if he won the electoral votes AND the popular vote.

All they have to do is have a couple swing states join the compact and the electoral college will be circumvented with California, NYC and Chicago essentially determining future elections with swing state voters being disenfranchised.

It hasn’t worked like that. They EC can vote anyway they want to basically. They have always voted with the people in the past. They can vote against our wishes, but it won’t go over well.

You should probably read into what the electoral college actually is. State electoral college members can absolutely subvert the popular vote. That is their purpose actually. As fuck up as it is.

Personally I think the EC should be abolished as I am a staunch advocate of democracy, but that’s a convo for another time

To establish a program by entering into agreement or a compact, to assign those electoral votes to the "popular" vote, bypassing their purpose or changing the intent of how those votes are cast, to be defined by automation... Cannot stand scrutiny. Our election process is not about the 50.00001%, and those elcetorals can vote against the tide, or with it, but they must cast their vote, and not have it assigned by default. That is unacceptable! What next? Those votes go automatically to any minority candidate? Or oldest? How about any Muslim automatically lose? Is bullshit!

And you should probably better understand we are not a Democracy, but a Republic. The electoral was established to avoid the very thing they intend to enforce by this action.

Oh no I completely understand we are not a democracy and that we are a Representative republic. That's my problem and why I said I am a staunch advocate of democracy and why I think the EC should be abolished. And also sorry if I sounded standoffish, wasn't my intention, only that I am in complete disbelief at this supposed compact and think it is absolutely a horrible offense to what we currently have as law.
