For what purpose that properly documented photos and chains of custody wouldn't accomplish?
If your house gets broken into, the authorities don't keep it for 3 or more years while trials and appeals are exhausted. Same for a car.
Why is it different with guns?
My plate was stolen and the police had it for over a year (state), lost it, then I was given a ticket for no plate.
Beat the ticket but was a big hassle getting a free replacement coupon from the troopers, went to a different barracks lied and got one.

" My be it was returned?But I also believe Albany has a Safe Storage Law, so the owner may have an issue if from Albany.
