Stock Screw Torque Specs

Maybe to help us build a quick-reference data base, I am posting the stock screw specs I know, obtained from the manufacturer, for use with FACTORY stocks:

Remington 700-30 in lbs min; 35 in lbs max (ADL front trigger guard screw 10 in lbs)

Ruger American-60 in lbs

Screws and bolts torque specs are rated by there size (diameter). I will try to find a link to a chart. I realize some engineers and designers put screws and bolts in places not in the same ranges as bolt or screw rating.

Yes' I'm aware. I'm an old auto mechanic, but did attend formal schooling. I'm a stickler for proper torque specs.

Huh? Much better method below. Note that this method requires skill and practice. Over time you will develop what is called 'mechanics feel'. Don't expect immediate results however.

Here is the ancient and time-tested technique:

1. Acquire a high dollar precision torque wrench.
2. Carefully adjust it to maximum torque setting.
3. Double check wrench is at max setting.
4. Now, slowly torque until bolt head breaks off then back off exactly 1/4 turn.​

Much older method...grab whatever cheap screwdriver you have handy, whether it fits or not, because tools cost money you'd rather spend on beer, tighten until your knuckles are white, the screw breaks, or you mar the screw head beyond repair, whichever comes first.

i grew up in machine shop and auto tech .. i say in the last 2 years .. its been law at work .. oil threads and torque for tractor trailer wheels to prevent loosing a wheel .. what ?? a bolt is built to this spec to a to torque spec .. is it dry or wet with oil .. same as a screw now i would say .. back in the day .. if u added oil .. need more torque ... i smell fishy .. lol

We should also discuss proper torquing technique. When more than one fastener is involved, divide final torque spec by 3 or 4, and torque each screw slowly and evenly in a logical order until all screws are torqued to final spec. Example would be Rem 700 BDL with a 30 in lb final torque spec. Tighten front screw to 10 in lbs, then rear screw to 10. Then front screw to 20, rear screw to same. Then front screw to 30, then rear screw.

Also good practice to recheck screw torque after using/shooting the rifle a time or two, after that they normally take a 'set' and stay tight.

Technically never supposed to lube wheel lugs...strange policy. I don't lube stock screw threads. Scope base and ring screws are considered lubed with (blue or purple, never red!) threadlocker on the threads, but I always use it, and always will.
