Swedish Mausers - Thoughts?

I have 3 of them. Two M96/38s and one M96. All still in the original 6.5x55 Swedish chambering. My personal opinion, great rifles for the money. That is, considering what I gave for them in '94. The M96 is a bit long to be used for anything like deer hunting, but could be a woodchuck or varmint type gun. The M96/38s are a little more handy but are a little hefty. In all though, for rifles that are easily 100 + years old they are really enjoyable to shoot and good little rifles.

I really like them. The machining quality is excellent. You can work the action with such ease as to make it effectively effortless. I think mine are 1901, 1910 and 1913.

I haven't seen it unavailable. The stripper clips are not impossible to find but they do cost a little bit. I haven't bought any in forever though.

I have had a few over the years. I still have two, an M96 made in 1900 and a mint M94 made in 1904. Both are good shooters, the M96 being more accurate. Most M96's will shoot a few inches high at 100 yards as they are zeroed at 300 meters. The 6.5X55 is a good high power round that doesn't have much kick to it. The ammo used to be cheap, not so much now. Federal used to make gold medal match ammo for 6.5. I don't know if they still do. If your going to buy your 1st one i would suggest the M38. They are well balanced and would be good for target or deer hunting.

I have an Urma code 27 39' & a Steyr 42' bnz k98k can't say the quality would match a Swedish Mauser. With the wartime 98's it's more about the history you know..

I really want to add a wartime K98k to the collection. Almost had one, but the son of the guy who brought it home found out one of his kids took it to a "gunsmith" who declared it unsafe and JB Welded the bolt shut.

At the time it wasn't an investment! Just luck I guess. Your K98s are a good investment too. Mitchells Mausers used to have some nice ones back in the day.

I am no expert on classics but it is my understanding that Swedish are known for consistency and quality. On average a better buy.

Very smooth actions. They look good even after a hundred years! I got the flash hider and front sight hood just for shits and grins. I was able to run down a couple bayonets also. The have a very interesting bayonet retention system.

Some people do hunt with a c&r rifle (mosin, Finn, 8mm Mausers..) But it wouldn't be my first choice with SO many other options on the market.
I like to travel lite & use a optic when I hunt (And I'm not into putting a scope on a c&r or sporterizing them. I prefer c&r as they are for target shooting.)

Mine are in "as issued" condition which is the only way I will have a surplus rifle. I really like the 30-40 Krag, but most I have seen have been sporterized. I have used my 38 for woodchucks, but it is too heavy for much else. They are quite accurate, probably owing to the profile of the barrel and the quality of the machine work. The round is good too in my opinion.
