Ridiculous as far as I'm concerned. If you're incapable of an intelligent debate then you shouldn't be debating. Hurling insults in response to something you don't agree with will do nothing but build on the already prevalent echo chamber effect social media and forums like this have created. I've had plenty of great discussions with liberals about guns and politics in general, they didn't suddenly turn republican but they certainly left with a different opinion on certain issues than when we started, and one thing I'm always told at the end of a discussion is that it is a relief to be able to speak with someone who's able to articulate their opinion rather than spout off a bunch of nonsense.

Enlighten these people, don't insult them. They're not all calling us racists or gun nuts. If you assume they are then you're going to make yourself look bad in front of someone who's opinion you might have been able to swing our way, even if just a bit.

I agree with you about trying to engage with intelligent debate with people that hold opposite views than my own. I can tell you my and your experiences with doing this have been vastly different. I have been called every name in the book for taking the views I have. People have been rude if not down right disrespectful. It hasn't stopped me from still trying, but it led to me cutting people out of my personal life. I have no use to have a "friend" or acquaintance in my life that holds vastly different view points and can't respect mine.

Where I do agree with this article is the time for playing nice is over on our side, politically speaking. When the dems had full control the last thing they worried about is plating nice with the conservatives. They pushed their agenda hard with no regard of the opposing view point. They did this so hard that many of us conservatives don't think we can even swing the pendulum back to our side at all. So I think our side needs to work hard to accomplish this and reaffirm our belief that our electorate is working for what we believe in.

They're not. I know plenty who aren't.

I also know plenty who are but that's irrelevant. You can't start a conversation assuming their opinion of you based on their political beliefs. Once that position is clear then I think you have two options, 1, be an asshole and tell them off which will solidify their opinion and make them feel justified or prove them wrong. I usually choose to prove them wrong, or do my best at the very least.

Of course with anything YMMV but even in situations where I find myself being looked down on I present myself in the best manner possible. Why not? In the end someone watching the exchange may go "Man that other guy sure was a dick" or when they reflect on the conversation they might realize they were being irrational. I know I've done that with discussions I've had in the past. The chances of that aren't very high, but I really don't subscribe to anything that is going to further divide the two sides here.

My experience is also vastly different than yours capitalcrew.
I am a very calm and respectful person but almost 100% of the time when I talk to a liberal, they give that look of pity and tell me I am completely wrong and I should do my research. The fact is, I will not argue a point with a liberal unless im 100% positive im correct. They have no use for facts.
The ones I know get their information from facebook and other social media, they have no use for "real" news.
Now im not talking about democrats in general. Im talking about 3 bathroom, white men suck, hillary was robbed liberals. I know a few old school democrats that do not agree with the hard left liberals.
If you are saying youve had productive conversations with hardcore, falling from the sky snowflakes, you are very, very lucky. They are conditioned to disagree with a conservative on EVERY issue. However I agree with them on several things.

If and when I have a discussion with a Liberal Minded person, I try to remain calm and poised. I believe that all are entitled to their opinions. Right or wrong. I am fine as long as the opinions are not made from lies and false statements.

When I was on jury duty a couple of weeks ago, there were a few Libs in the room with me. Conversations began and quickly turned to guns. I never got hot under the collar, but I made sure that their thoughts and opinions were built upon lies. Each and every statement that they made about guns was wrong. Wrong on every level. I stood firm and explained over and over about how they have been fooled into believing these lies.

I doubt that I changed the minds of these poor, misguided Liberals; but I made sure they heard how wrong they were. There were other topics we spoke of, funny, they had zero True facts to back up their dribble.

My in-laws are extreme left politically. My father -in-law started accusing me of racism years ago, the first time at my dinner table while I'm feeding him. I straight up told him F*** Y** I have never said or acted anything racist in my life. Then my wife and children lit into him. Imagine having your skinny little granddaughters foaming at the mouth mad at you. He backed way off and finally said he assumed I was a racist because I was white blue colar, and that he was a racist when he was younger. I told him not to confess me to his sins.

The only queer women with cats that I know own guns and hunt deer. I only know one couple like that and they are very conservative in most views, like economics, crime and religion.

Lesbians are actually my favorite demographic of people. Widely varied, a lot of fun to talk to, usually down to earth. Typically the first one to elbow you and go "Dude, look at that!"
