Newly released records [SEE HERE] from a FOIA show the Weissmann/Mueller special counsel team “accidentally” wiped 15 iPhones of data early in 2018 after the phones were requested by the office of inspector general for review.

Mueller’s lead investigator Andrew Weissmann accidentally wiped two phones himself; through a lengthy process of entering the wrong passcode several times over a period of three hours; removing data to show his activity during the special counsel. Weissmann claimed to have entered the wrong password (takes ten attempts) and that erased all the data. Greg Andre, a former deputy assistant attorney general in the Justice Department’s criminal division, made the same claim.

1. It is not "difficult" to wipe an iPhone; in fact one of law enforcement's well publicized complaints (and mine too on the civil side) is how difficult it can be to get good defensible iPhone data without the user or owners consent / cooperation.

2. I take it these people were (or should have been) the subjects of a document retention policy, rather than the forensic examiners assigned to image and analyze the devices but correct me if im off on that (i.e. these are their own phones that were- or probably should have been- subject to a document hold, not other peoples phones they were forensically examining as part of their investigation).

Smells like crap to me if Im reading it right because the people who were conducting the investigation itself have wiped portions of the paper trail of the investigation they conducted. Not evidence on the investigation but the communications they had internally during the investigation. Personally, I record and keep damn near everything, trivial or not.

Dos cintavos from a veteran of a forensic collection or two including some white collar cases you'd probably recognize. Which is not to kiss my own ass but I know what I'm talking about this one time, at least.

you mean they accidentally did a factory reset on the phones .. LOL ..

On most phones, you can reset your phone through the Settings app. If you can't open your phone's Settings app, you can try factory resetting your phone using its power and volume buttons.

PS to my above- most iPhone collections we do these days is from iTunes rather than the device itself. No Ft. Meade required as long as the data is backed up- by the cooperative user.

And the really sad part is that nothing will happen know one will get prosecuted or fined go to jail just will benefit from it by writing a book the system is beyond repair
