Thinking of re-barreling my SCR?

Any thoughts on Bear Creek Arsenal? I found this one. Not many non-threaded 16" barrels to chose from.

The BCA AR-15 Barrel is a unthreaded 16" heavy profile barrel made of 4150 chrome moly vanadium steel with a black nitride finish, a carbine length gas system with a 1:8 twist rate. The barrel is chambered in .223 Wylde and machined with M4 feed ramps in the barrel extension.

All Finished Barrels go through a 100% Inspection Process.

Inspections Equipment includes CMMs and Air Gauges for the Bores.

BCA's expectations is that our Barrels, 16 inch or longer, will hold a 1.000" MOA at 100 yards with appropriate ammo and shooting techniques.


Can't get hurt with this price! On sale for $64.66 ($95.99)

Never buy a carbine ported barrel. There isn't one good single reason for doing that.
If it is 16" look for a mid length porting.
The price difference means nothing when compared to the cost of what you are going to feed through it.

Not sure I understand what you mean by ported?

Sorry, Ported means drilled. Carbine ported saying the hole that is drilled in the barrel is in a position to take
a carbine length gas tube that is too short for this type of firearm.
the only reason we have carbine ported barrels is because of the Military style carbines that is a design mistake
because they did them shorter in order to be able to use the Grenade launcher bracket.
Then this style of barrel became popular with the civilian market because of esthetic reasons but nothing
really good comes with those M4 style barrels.

A) The port is too close. A mid length or rifle port is a lot better balanced and everything runs smoother and cooler.

B) Those slots cut in the M4 style barrels that are so popular serve no purpose and weaken the barrel. Not
an issue in the barrel above but a bull straight profile all the way to the gas port also doesn't make the barrel
much better.

C) The 1/2 threads popular in military style barrels and AR15 should have never existed. 5/8 threads is much
better as it gives more thickness between the bore and the threads in that critical area. This will potentially
avoid crown swelling over time.

In summary things to avoid:

1. Carbine ported barrels.
2. M4 style barrel profile.
3. 1/2x28 threads on the muzzle.

Also nitrocarburazation (melonite) has been proven possibly the best finishing method for 4140/4150 barrels.

Eddie's right. I had 2 barrels that BCA replaced due to such poor groups at 100 yards with match grade ammo. Barrels were 223 Wylde, carbine length gas, 16" with 1:8 twist. I was getting 6 to 8 inch groups at 100 yards off the bench in a lead sled. Tried 55 grain up to 79 grain. I haven't used the new ones yet so I can't say how well they shoot. As long as you don't expect the same accuracy that you'd get out of a top end barrel I'd say go for it. If plinking and hitting large plates all you have in mind no problem. If you are interested in competing (e.g. 3Gun) then look elsewhere.

Don't cheap out on barrels. Faxon and Ballistic Advantage both offer a quality, reasonably priced product.
Also, yes for a 16" a midlength gas system is the way to go.

I started this thread back in Feb. And got some really good advice from the more knowledgeable members (@meketrefe ,@Eddie Gunks , @Podmonkey, @Calculon and @dsdmmat ) I ended up going with a Green Mountain Barrel 19" SS (target grey) rifle length gas tube, with a 1/6 twist on dsdmmat's recommendation! (Plus I caught it on sale $30.00 off!!!) So along with the handguard that I won in a KARMA from @Robin, I think I have built the perfect FUAC Rifle!!! ( Like David Allen Coe's Perfect Country and Western Song LOL!) I also swapped out the Nikon 3- 9 x 40 BDC scope to my Nikon Coyote Special 4.5 - 14 x 40 scope.

I do need to adjust that off-hand seems okay but off the bi-pod not so much

The handguard is great!!!! Plus it is M-Lok.

M-Lok is the best lok lol, but these are the handguards I was considering for my .458socom pistol build (was just about to pull the metaphorical trigger on ordering the lower since I finally learned about a local ffl that will do the transfer, but then I got the notification for G17 frames being in stock)

lol. it seemed a tad back and high to me.
I wonder if you would be better with a set of straight low size rings? obviously as soon as the scope clears in the front.
Either small or medium and then you might shim the comb unless it is adjustable.
Best thing is to stack a bunch of coins and with masking tape figure out the height and ergonomics before buying rings or mounts.
And try prone on the floor too as we tend to dig deeper into the comb and forward
when we shoot prone. The eye is lower.

Bca has about the same reputation as the Clintons.


Three things to never cheap out, your bcg, barrel, and optics set up. Those are the heart of any ar type rifle.

And I thought the SCR was done, not quite!

So my Browning Buckmark has this Bushnell red-dot on it and the pistol has a full length rail that must come off to clean and the I have to readjust the red-dot!



So I now change it to a Sig Romeo5 that I bought on sale at PSA.



And mounted the Bushnell on a Trueglo riser for the SCR that can be removed with out disturbing the the Red-dot!



To which I also mount a set of iron sites that just so happen to Co-Witness very nice though the Red-dot!



And they are out of the way when I put the scope back on!



Maybe now the SCR is done??

Isnt a tad high or you have a comb raiser?
Normally you want to come down forward and put your cheek well seated against a good support. Personslly I like a neoprene wrap over the cheek rsiser.

I shot it a bit, it grouped pretty good at 50 yards but opened up at 100 as I expected with the pencil barrel ( Just like the old Mini 14's) Had I not scored the complete rifle used but un-fired for $599.99 I would have just bought the lower.

Most mass producing shops don't do it right and for what a 223 or a grendel?
there is no need but if you want something then do a press fit and pinned flush brake.
there is no threads so the SAFE BS does not apply.

I mean there are plenty of big bore options, or even the AR 10...

Also this isnt a mass produce shoe. It's like 1 dude and his shop. Or for those still shooting 3 gun, lot of 3 gun ARs with comps (granted porting wont be anything like a 3 or 5 chamber comp)
