From another board.
So here's a story from beyond belief in Commifornia. Two years ago while at a local outdoor range with three young family shooters. There were several other adult shooters on the line and several more staging and observing, normal for a clear, warm day. So, at some point this dirt bag who had been watching took off with my 1932 Colt National Match which was on the bench behind me as I was distracted helping my nephew. Mostly my fault but it is what it is. This pistol had been in my family since it was new and handed down generation to generation. Called the cops, reviewed the video and even identified the guy who stole it. The cops tracked the guy, raided his house and retrieved my Colt. Happy ending right? No... Because it had never been registered, although otherwise legal it was required that I get a court order for them to release my property to me. Understand, I had the decade’s old sales receipt to my grandfather, the insurance documents, the box and all. Anyways the judge required that I get the pistol registered then return to the courts with proof of registration. After much argument, letters to the NRA and legal consultation I started the process of registration with a local FFL. Ever try to register a gun without it being in hand, very difficult to say the least. Anyways, 4 months later with all the paperwork, court order and proof of ownership in hand I go to the Sheriff's office where I was told my gun was. However, they had moved it because it had been so long. I had to make an appointment at the central facility, two weeks later. So I was there but my gun could not be located. Misfiled, stored or whatever but not officially lost or destroyed, just misplaced. That was many months ago, my collectors grade 1911 with a value around $6-$11k is in fact lost, by the authorities. Another successful confiscation by the state of Commifornia and there is legally nothing more I can do. The NRA is useless, the legal system is corrupt and I've been advised that I've no further recourse and that I should be happy that my home hasn't been raided and the rest of my modest collection taken because I've demonstrated agitation with the public authorities... That's why I'm leaving this state, my home, my family, my roots... As a warning to you all, I with all of my friends always said it wouldn't happen, except it did and is getting worse every year and month
