Virginia has always been a liberal haven.
Ever since NoVA has become an extension of DC. As government has grown the outer suburbs keep expanding and building up. And thanks to Clinton/Bush/Obama There are a solid 2 decades of serious government growth full of deep state disciples intent on keeping their piece of the pie.
Virgina seems to have the same demographic problem NY has...a major urban liberal area dominstes the rest of the state.

Only over the past 15-20 years did the Northern Virginia suburbs become any annex of D.C. populated by bureaucratic Liberals. In the same way that NYC drags down NY state, so does Northern Virginia for Virginia.

Your correct. Virginia is now a liberal stronghold and trump lost Virginia anyway. There's no reason to think anyone other than the dem would have won.
But my contention is that 95% of people who voted for trump know the media lies and everyone else is constantly obstructing him. I don't see anyone complaining about their 401k absolutely kicking ass or the very low unemployment.

You're forgetting the key component to why the GOP will be fine in the Midterms: Dem stupidity and their inevitable over correction to the Left to suck up to the Bern, BLM, ANTIFA and other core America hating constituencies that the geniuses at the DNC think are the future of their Party.

First, Gillespie did not want to have Trump campaign with him, he was good on proposing: stopping sanctuary cities and the destruction of monuments from the War Between the States, but he was not a Trump populist.
One structural problem that I see is the Republic continues to Balkanize, the New Democratic party is still pushing a kill/destroy whitey agenda; at some point the Dems should stop demonizing straight white males, but shame on any white straight male dumb enough to vote for a Democrat.
