Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8X - feedback wanted

Helping my son build a 3Gun rifle and looking at optics. Don't want to spend a fortune until I see if he really gets into it. If so he can save for a better scope and upgrade when he's ready.

Midway running a sale on the Strike Eagle 1-8x for $399 including a cantilever mount and free shipping. Unless anyone has negative feedback it seems like a no-brainer. Has anyone used it?

The Strike Eagles seem to be well regarded for what you get for the price. Dont just assume that 1-8>1-6 though. Factor in optical performance, eye box/relief, field of view and weight also.
Many of the 30mm 1-8s seem to be making significant compromises in these areas to achieve that wide magnification spread in the slender tube. Even the high end 30mm 1-8s like the Nightforce NX8 are reported to have finicky eye boxes and optical issues. Compare with the 1-6 version first.

Nothing against vortex, but if I was getting a cheaper variable, it would be a primary arms. Their acss reticle kicks ass and is even being built in acogs now.

I am scrimping and saving for a Kahles 1-6.

I have the 1-6 and I love it. I'd suggest that over the 1-8 for weight purposes. You'll rarely need the 8x and the 1x ends up not being as clear as a trade off.

I have looked at a bunch of scopes and I am leaning towards the vortex strike eagle. I really like it.
