I'll keep it short. New gun owner (1 year). Lurked here on and off. I'm a private person and keep mostly to myself. I'm a registered Democrat of a couple decades, have watched my party and country go insane. This morning for the first time I went to the polls and voted Republican down the ballot on federal and state offices.

In the 60's my dad was a labor, blue collar democrat. He was a union man back when steelworkers strongly needed unions and Kennedy as a president was respected by all even if you didn't vote for him. Lots of WWII and Korean War veterans like my uncles were blue collar democrats, but they were union workers, had work ethic and if they didn't work one job they worked two to support the family. They were family oriented people who took their families seriously. Most of them didn't have high school degrees but they pushed for their kids to go to college. Somewhere in the 60's the counter culture kicked in and the political landscape started diving to pursue their constituents. Republicans and democrats, both parties compromised on their ethics and principals. I'm no puritan or virgin but some of the shit politicians and the constituents do was something you would never see in 1960.

My dad passed away in July 2000, he died a registered democrat. He loathed the Clinton family and their behavior. He hated communist and socialist principals. Five of his six kids became republican minded voters. Five of his six kids are handgun owners, 4 of us in NY.

Keeping it short and private again, I went left in university. I could write a lot about that but it's the same old story. White protestants are basically an extinct species in top schools. So I was basically isolated and doing my best to try and fail to conform. I've done well in life and have no use for regrets but it did lead to some bad decisions that I can't undo.

I have respect for JFK in some ways but his biggest legacy was a disastrous accident. The Immigration Act of 1965 was foisted on the country and completely transformed our population in a way that almost no one advocating it at the time predicted.

In all this mess there is a glimmer of hope. As they say conservative is the new counterculture and Generation Z is not like the millennials.

yep I was pretty left wing in college too.

I still hold some left wing views like opposition to capital punishment and the private prison system, but every year the democrats become more abhorrent. I don’t think I am changing all that much; the democratic party of 20 years ago was far more pragmatic. They have completely lost the plot.

    Welcome aboard.

IMO the dems are the ones who have changed. The Rs and D's used to have some similarity, both generally loved America and could find ways to compromise when it mattered. But more recently the dems have completely lost their minds are essentially are now evolved into far left socialist idealogues. They are just going to continue their far left turn and keep accelerating.
