I don't think it's a matter of ball rounds or hollow points. Pistol rounds just suck. Period. You'll see many YouTube and liveleak videos of the same thing happening with hollow points from LEO's.

All hollow points do is try to act like a caliber that's bigger than itself. A 9mm after expanding for example will push tissue out the way the same way a .50 cal ball round would would but with a hell of a lot less penetration.

The actual expansion process does nothing in the hunan body for incapacitation. It's too slow.

As I say, I have confidence that 64gr 223s would be quite effective. Or 00 buckshot. Or 150gr Federal Fusion.
As for the pistols, I certainly won't be shooting one round at a time.

Every time I see one of these videos I am constantly reminded of the difference between real life and movies/television. Of course the vast majority of people in this country get their impressions of gun violence from movies and television. In the movies one or two shots put the bad guy down. The continued disconnect between reality and make believe is nothing short of astonishing.

When defending yourself with a pistol, your job is to hit vitals. Sometimes, those vitals don't get hit and you have to put more holes into the target until a vital is struck or until the perp mentally checks out.

Whether hollow points or non expanding rounds, the results are the same until a vital is struck. Hollow points increase those chances very slightly because they make slightly bigger holes that can nik a vital where the solid would have missed. However, they limit penetration. So depending on the angle or hard barrier or clothing barrier involved, or both and an arm in way, it can actually not penetrate enough.

It's a give or take situation. I prefer deeper penetration and practice for shot placement instead. It's the best of both worlds. Insufficient penetration is always bad.

Most of the replies in here are of the same type as this.

You have to be just as prepared MENTALLY as you do physically to pull that trigger. You have to be ready and willing to end another person's life.
That's not as easy as people make it out to be. It's a very big decision, and not one you should be making in the heat of the moment.
Any hesitation, any reluctance, and you'll either miss or not put enough rounds into someone to end the threat.
Once you're prepared, mentally, having a gun is just extra. Anything nearby becomes a potential weapon you can use to protect yourself.

That's why banning guns doesn't do shit for crime. People who have already decided to break the law will still break the law. With a gun, bat, crowbar, tire-iron, chair leg, fists, harsh language...it won't matter.

Before someone decides to carry they need to decide if they can do what must be done to protect themselves and others. It won't matter if you crawl into a hole and bawl your eyes out AFTER. Just be ready BEFORE.
