Sorry folks, If I had tried to find a camera I wouldn't have been able to watch it for so long. I was having my morning coffee by the front bay window and a big black bear came walking down the street. Nearest it came to window was 30 yards, out of view at 100 yards. Viewing time 30 seconds. Big blocky head, No ear tags, BIG belly, beautiful black shiny coat, big thick legs. I say male because he walked like he owned the neighborhood. Deliberate, not in any hurry. Not a single dog barked. My wife saw the last 20 seconds of viewing. She said it was a lot bigger than our lawn tractor. I wouldn't have thought to reference it like that. I was thinking smaller than a very small car because my neighbor drives one and I first saw it in the roadway by my driveway. I was also thinking of a relative who weighs 400lbs. and this bear seemed bigger.
I tried to find a chart to field judge the weight. Anybody know of a link?
I know when the police killed the bear that killed my neighbors goats 17 years ago it took six struggling grown me to get it into the back of a pickup truck, somebody said 600 lbs, but I doubt that. Dead weight is very difficult to move. That would be a record book bear. That bear had a PA Game tag on it's ear, old boar. Was said to have killed a couple of calves over by the Delaware River 2 weeks before. Sparrowbush? I only saw this bear from the back as my neighbor was beating it with a rake to make it let go of her goat so I don't have the same perspective. My wife was trying to pull my neighbor back by her sweatshirt while I had my .44 at low ready.
We've been in this house 24 years. I've seen some good size bears in that time and this latest was the biggest. For years I've kept bear spray in the shed, back porch, and on the riding mower.
