Wow. 8.39% school tax increase possibly coming in my town

I will vote no, but I’m sure most of the other morons in my town will vote yes. Also increasing the tax levy by .78%. That’s a 9% increase. This is stupid and ridiculous because a few years ago they asked us to vote yes on combing two schools to save us money. I voted yes, but was concerned. They said it will save in the long run. So I said ok I’ll vote yes on this, but I’ll never vote for another increase again. I have stuck to that.
Last vote they schooled the stupid by reducing school tax rate, but a large increase in the levy. People don’t know what the levy is. I’m just sick of it. I got a 2% raise and the government just takes more, more, more.

When I first moved into our house 26 years ago school and property taxes were roughly similar. Now school taxes are 40% higher than our property taxes.

Hers the best part. Regardless of how I vote my taxes will still go up. The contingency vote only saves the entire district $100,000. This is a joke. But I’ll save $461 in a star exemption. I don’t get then entire you pay this, but I’ll refund you a small portion of it??

They do have a well-funded wood shop, but the kids are assholes. His teacher basically said fuck it and I give up. They sand the safety glasses, cut the desks and counters on purpose, glue and epoxy stuff to other things. My son was #2 in the county for tech the one year and he was building a bridge. Some asshole kid smashed his work And he had to go after school for weeks to rebuild it. I was kind of pissed as was his teacher. His teachers a good guy.
There’s a couple good conservatives in my district. The gov teacher tells the kids I don’t want opinions come armed with facts, he has a pro-2a sticker on his truck and the one teacher says all the time I hate liberals.

My town is growing. There are new developments, new streets, new houses, new stores, new businesses all going in. The tax base has grown. There is more revenue. My town is not stagnant.

Yet, my school taxes are still likely going up 3-4%.

Many people in WNY are paying 6000-8000 depending on town and school district you can reduce that to 1000. It's unreal.

I think @VietnamEraVet is originally from OP so if he had village taxes too could easily have been over 8k a year.

Taxes on my $92,000 house in NY were $5045 a year.
In TN my tax bill for a $135.000 house is $465 a year.
No state income tax.
They do charge 6.75% sales tax on groceries which stinks but they gotta get the revenues somewhere I suppose.

That's always pissed me off. That shouldn't be my responsibility, I didn't want any kids for a reason.

If the public schools operated much more efficiently and effectively I might think a little differently about it. Maybe. But probably not. Even if there was some sort of sliding scale to where I paid some school taxes but not as much as people with kids that are actually in school... IDK. The guy I work for had 3 young kids in school. He and his wife went in for a regular parent teacher conference meeting. While they were in the school they noticed some BLM banners displayed in the school. Even though the school policy is no political signs/banners or whatever.

( just for clarity this school district is in farm country with probably about 99% white students.)

Anyways, that along with some other concerns. He pulled his kids out of the public indoctrination center and now his kids are being home schooled. But of course he still has to pay the school taxes for the school that he took his kids out of. What a racket school taxes are.

I live in a good school district per say. The school district doesn't seem to be as out of control as the other school districts that surround me.

Most of the people around here usually vote no on budget increases. That could have something to do with it. A neighboring school district had a huge tax increase because a brand new artificial turf was installed on the school football field. What's next, a dome?

My Wife left the School she'd worked 17 years for because it came down to the inmates runny the asylum while administrators were paying themselves over $125K a year. We too are a small, rural/farming community, and if it's this bad here, I can't imagine what it must be like in City's especially the larger ones.

School budgets are a scam. I believe nys law mandates that school budgets can only stay flat or go up. I think the quote I read is that districts aren't allowed to save money by hurting kids. The old "it's for the children" line.

That's why the first things that are cut when budgets fail are sports and extracurricular activities. School administrations simply will not consider anything else.

Many school districts, like mine, now show two budgets. The recommended budget and the contingency budget that automatically applies if the proposed budget fails. The insult is the contingency isn't much less than the proposed budget.

The message is clear - surprise you tax paying sucker! There's nothing you can do to stop the ever upward trend in school budgets!

Mine it also growing at a strong clip (eastern rochester suburbs and surrounding areas). There's a new street with 20 lots. Houses are about $800k. Another development 20 min east of the city has a dozen lots or so and the builder is asking $850k for those. More affordably there is a new development with houses starting around $350k new but going easily to 400 or more.

It will be interesting to see what impact higher mortgage rates have on these. If you bought an $800k house with 20% down your mortgage at 5.5% with property taxes will be in the vicinity of $5500/month. I know there are some rich folk in the area but really this many, and also willing to live where these developments are? Weirdly I have seen some lots that were unsold for literally a decade all get scopped up in the past 2-3 years and now mostly are sold with new $600k houses on them.

Our school district proudly proclaims they are increasing spending 15% (over the previous years budget that was actually not followed and spending exceeded the approved budget amount) but are only increasing revenue spending from tax collection by 3% ( over the actual spending that exceeded the approved budget),

these assholes believe that taxpayers won't realize

1) they are still on the hook for the extra recurring 12% this year that's coming from more state and federal spending,

2) they are making the spending percentage less by comparing the new budget to the over-spending instead of the new budget.

I knew if you voted it down there was a contingency budget, but I always thought it was substantially less not 0.28% less and they just shoveled the 8.11% increase down your throat. If that’s how it is why bother with the vote?
