WTB old single shot shotguns

Just like it says, older single shots .410-12Ga. NO DAMASCUS! Prefer old dented bent rusted barrels, so in other words I want them cheap. My goal is to remove the bbl (to avoid running afoul of the ATF) and cutting it down short and then rebarrel it to various pistol/rifle calibers like .37 Max, 44-40 ectra. Lets keep the cheap as I will be paying the stupid FUAC transfer fee. Also should be close to Rochester.

something to be mindful of, if it starts as a shotgun, even if you remove the stock, any barrel under 18" is considered an sbs.

Thanks guys but the stock stays and the action will work just like it's supposed to, the difference will be a barrel blank machined down to fit INTO the approximately the rear 6-8" of the shotguns bbl. It will NOT be a short barrel gun at all! The barrel blanks run in length between 20"and 26".
Basically I want to make my one single shot rifle from an old unusable shotgun.

A friend bought a whole set if 12 gauge incerts.
I shot the 22lr incerts it was really quiet but shot all over the place at 10 yards.

No not inserts, almost all of the shotgun bbl will be removed and replaced with another bbl of say .35 caliber and then the chamber would be reamed out to .357 Max. and a new extractor fitted.

Depends on you. I'm looking for old beat up guns so that might rule out yours, I'd also have to replace the shoulder stock on yours.

I still don't get it. You're cutting off the shotgun barrel to a still legal length and inserting a 6"-8" barrel liner of a pistol or rifle caliber, modifying the extractor to remove the empty cartridge. Zat it?

I question if it will be any cheaper than buying off the shelf, but different strokes.

We have a WINNER!! Sorry if I didn't explain it better, I knew what I meant why didn't yall? I will turn the blank down to a nice sporter contour and the barrel length would most likely be somewhere around 19-20" . For safety it will be a low pressure cartridge for sure. I do have one 'doner' 12 ga now and would like to find a .410 and make that into something like .22Hornet or .219Zipper. I'd probably stay with the Hornet as brass is easier to find, but on the other hand who's ever seen a .219 Zipper rifle???

I'm sure it will be cheaper, just as long as my labor is free and we don't add in any usage of lathe or any other equipment. Honestly this will be a quick way to spend $500 on a $100 if I figure any labor at all, but WTH I don't drink or smoke or cheat on my wife so I need something to do!

If you're making the barrel liners , what steel will you be using and are you are set up for rifling and do you have reamers for chambering? Will you be soldering them in or epoxy? Just curious.

Not making them, that's a bit beyond me. I can rent chambering reamers for just about anything that's ever been made, of course some are $ and others are $$$$. I'd turn the blank down close to the ID of the shotgun 'stub' and epoxy, then when set drill and pin underneath. If I'm going to scope it I'd drill the stub before epoxying.

The only thing I'm not keen on is the epoxy. I do understand it will be pinned. I'd rather have a metal to metal with no epoxy to soften when it heats up. A push fit or light press would be better for me. This isn't going to be a .22 . Of course this method requires some precision measuring tools and makes the job a little more difficult.

Tony, Epoxy is now an accepted practice in fixing barrel liners and used by everyone I know of that does that kind of work, I don't know what kind of epoxy they use though. There are a lot difficulties involved with the OP's job ahead, I wish him well.

Robin, I do understand the epoxy as being an accepted practice. No idea of the details of the design. I suppose the epoxy doesn't sit well with me being a retired machinist/toolmaker. I'd just as soon not use it myself...

I really don't see the job as being particularly tough, a lot depends on the quality of the wiring between the brain and the hands...
