X Thread About Armor/Rig, What Are Your Thoughts

A friend gave me a set of armor. I put it on and laughed. At my age and condition I wouldn’t make it to the end of the driveway and back
I used to follow this account on Twitter for a while/ The more I followed him, the more I realized what a useless tool he is.
This argument is similar to the 9mm vs 45 ACP discussion. This particular piece of gear, IMO, is each to his own. I have an Armor kit. It has decent coverage and with a few added pockets and attachments, I can carry quite a bit.
I also have a chest rig. The chest rig that I have, carries nearly all of the same as the Kit does. I am not too old, yet, to carry the full load. Maybe down the road, it will be too much for me to carry, until then, I like the fit and the feel of my Plate carrier.

Seriously, he is a gear whore and a larper. He is made fun of all the time on Twitter by people that actually know.

IMO I think body armor absolutely has a place. I absolutely think citizens should be able to own it.
It's a tool in the tool box for usage.
I've seen countless videos on similar topics and everyone has different opinions and they're just that, opinions for clicks.
These are all hypothetical scenarios for the sake of Internet discussion, For example if you're driving around in some conflict area, guarding.your home, expecting some sort of hostility, trying to rescue a family member, you're probably going to want or wish you had armor. Maybe having the extra protection outweighs the cons.
If you're out patrolling around in the forest or trying to recon something, maybe not. Maybe you prioritize speed, endurance, maneuverability over protection.
Everything has pros/cons you have to weigh out. You can even make the argument wearing armor gives you a psychological advantage that even though it only covers a relatively small area of your body it mentally makes you feel better and more confident to have protection in a dangerous environment. Just mentally you might be more effective by wearing it you increase your confidence and ability to work that you increase your odds of survival even if it's only 5% it mentally matters.
And if you have a plate carrier who's to say you don't customize it depending on what you think you need or will be doing. If you want less weight take the plates out and just use it as an unarmored vest. Maybe you think only running a front plate is a good trade off of some protection but increased comfort and mobility by trying to lighten your load for mobility.
There's a million different opinions all from people on the Internet. You have to decide what matters to you.
Obviously this doesn't matter to people living in NY since no one here can buy plates.

I went this route. A concealable soft armor vest. Doesn't stop everything. Does offer protection to your sides. It is not light but very concealable under an XL Mothman hoodie. Even Frodo kept his mithril shirt concealed.
In my opinion it's a must own but not necessarily a must wear. I purchased heavy steel level 4 plates. Do I plan to take them on a recon, no. These are for home defense. Shooting from windows or a vehicle.
I plan to purchase cermanic level 4 plates to be light and more mobile in the future, for patrol scenarios.

I have this type as well. This is what goes in the Vest carriers that most cops wear. Many times while working, I would take it out of the carrier and wear it under my uniform shirt, not uncomfortable for me at all/.

I’m not thinking most people in a SHTF the fan situation are going to be walking around the AK’s and .308’s but hey I don’t know. The most popular rifle and round is .223/.556 by leaps and bounds. I’m not an AK fan some maybe I’m not being objective.
I’ve thought about body armor but never pulled the trigger. It’s the last thing on my list since I see limited applications for its use. I agree it’s hard to log that around and leave other things but it’s hard to say since if you need it you need it and the other things I’m talking about are useless of dead.

Outside NY they are very popular. On that note think how many SKS s there are they are fairly common

I bought some many years ago for the driver of my firetruck/engine. The 2 times a FF had been shot during a civil disturbance it was the driver of a rig while driving. Tower ladders weigh 26 tons and tip over easy. Pumpers also tip easy because of the 500 gallons of water they carry.
Plus there's 5 or 6 family people on a rig.
I never wore any myself. I didn't think it right to wear protection the rest of the crew didn't have.

I run level 4 ceramic plates. I am in no condition to assault any positions but in an escape and evade situation they can be useful. I also have a set for the wife.
