Most likely a half grown cougar, they just trapped and tagged a 197 pound cougar over by Spokane. Most of the nuisance cougar that are trapped & tagged are at the 150 pound range out here.

The one that killed the woman biker (bycikle) over in North Bend was 125 pounds I think. On the small side of the spectrum.
This happened a couple of months ago.

Coloration of body is all wrong for any cats in the US but mountain lion, from the little I can make out, that I am aware of. Cougars have been sighted, allegedly, in NY.

I am not calling BS on you at all but the two later pictures do look very much like a different animal if you look at the face coloration and more important in my mind, gait.

Ps the tail... I dunno. Bobbed? Weird. Shit happens.

Could very well be different but it is weird for two large 50ish pound cat sightings, in the same place one week apart. Usually just see 20 to maybe at most 25 pound bobcats once or twice a year.

I have to admit that after last week's sighting and seeing the fearless arrogance of this big cat, our varying night time dog walking routines, which were based on dealing with multiple relatively slow moving two legged predators, have been further updated and hardened. I never thought that the protective tools and behaviors we use in the more rugged south and west would be warranted in the Hudson Valley. We should have known better

An adult cougar will kill one deer size animal a week. That equals 52 deer a year. If there is one there chances there are others that the DEC will tell you that you are full of shit.

So if there are none there, then you can't shoot them right.

The Washngton Fish & Wildlife are fixated on restocking wolves, they have been lieing about where the let them go for years and lieing about how many there are, same with the cougar count.
Where I go shooting the local people are seeing wolves, the State Fish & Wildlife so they are seeing coyotes.
The coyotes out here are smaller then the coyotes back there on the East Coast. There is a huge difference between a 40 pound coyote and a 175 pound wolf.

I shoot every coyote that presents a shot, if by chance it had a radio collar it gets destroyed.

You can't shoot a wolf if there are none there.

Good insights. Although it / they did not act sick and where obviously well fed, this / these animal's behaviors were off and not typical in my experience. They were way too arrogant, fearless and even reckless. I would guess they are way too familiar with humans or even poorly bred by humans. It is sad if this is the case.

I got nothing else without more data but I will tell you one other thing it is not, since Highland alluded to them- it is not one of the hybrid coyotes (mixed with wolves) that came down from Newfoundland. We had one pass through here two years ago and that fucker was big, dark gray, and definitely all dog in shape.

We have routinely seen Eastern Coyotes in the area and they absolutely fear humans and dogs unless they are in season or protecting a litter. They are good sized but we have only seen one bigger than a shepard (it was cautiously pacing us for several minutes on a rail trail walk, unwilling to pass us even though our dog and us were aware of its location.) It was an amazing, beautiful, cautious animal even though it was a coyote. It would have been addressed if it challenged or got closer to us.

Cougar have very little fear of humans. One of my friends helps the game department when they run the cougar with dogs, the tree them tag them & install a collar.
He went one night on a cougar chase, that cat went up on people's porches, around there sheds, barns and out building a. The home owners were pisses and said the dogs chased the cougar up on thete porch.
That cougar was there before the dogs arrived.

They are constantly freeing these two year old cougar and running them up in the mountains to let them go.
They got one three blocks from our house about 4 years ago and let it go right at one of the places we go shooting.

Washington Fish & Wildlie say there are betwen 1,900 and 2,100 cougar in this State.

Oregon is about the same size and about the same habitat as Washington.
In this month's Fur, Fish, Game there is a articlel about Oregon's cougar' s.
They say that have 6,500 cougar's.
So 6,500 cougar's take 52 deer a piece a year do the math. That is over 300,000 deer a year.

Here locally they take dogs, cats, farm animals. Goats, sheep , horses.

So in my opinion Washington's game department are lieing about the cougar numbers just like their wolf program.

Over at the dairy farm I worked at a cougar killed a calf and drug it into the woods and ate about a 1/3 of it and covered it up.

A mile away it was killing a bunch of sheep and a half a mile from there it was killing a guys goats.

They are very effective killing machines, they are pure muscle and need to take in a high protein diet. Any thing is dinner to them, domestic or wild.

The guys out here that are big into trail cameras use to get a cat picture may be once in two or three years, now they are a common occurrence.

I seen a show on TV where they crossed a male African lion on a female Bengal tiger, they called it a Liger, it weighed eleven hundred pounds and was infertile like a mile.

They had the cross going the other way a male Bengal tiger bred to a female African lion, it was a lot smaller and looked completey different.

That is some interesting shit there.
I googled mountain lion, bobcat crosses, they come out looking a lot different like the labadoodles. Poodle, Labrador cross.

I guess when you get it to uncharted territory bobcat pussy would look good a male mountain lion.

If a mountain lion did cross with a bobcat which could of been possble being not many Cougar s there to breed with. The kitten Cougar stay with the mom for two years, you could have two, 2 year old kittens still hanging together that got shunned by mom.

I have seen trail cam pics from out here with a mother cougar with three kittens about 20 miles from my house in Granite Falls. The kittens were small, the mom had a collar on. Sure traveled about 85 miles in two years after being collared.

Very good possbility two bobcat/cougar crosses that would explain the difference in type between the two pictures.
Please set up a couple of trail cams so we can see better pictues.

For some reason I've been spending a bit of time looking at internet resolution pictures of wild cats of the Americas, ... go figure. I would guess this photo is a healthy Bobcat, but I would not argue with anyone who believes it is a closely related Lynx or a sample of the recently identified Lynx-Bobcat hybrids, which have recently been found inter-breeding in the wild in the Northeast U.S.
