The Shah was so in our pocket that we were in the middle of selling him our most advanced fighter jets right when he was deposed (F14s).
And the Ayatollah was so *not* our friend that the technicians who were delivering the F14s sabotage them on their way back out of the country. Right on top of him taking -400 Americans hostage, and us launching a military invasion if Iran to recover them.
