Kirk assassin’s alleged gun was powerful, vintage and hard to trace

"Mauser" is actually a Manufacturer's Brand Name: they made Millions of Rifles, sold to hundreds of Countries, under several dozen different models and calibers...the name is synonymous with the Bolt Action design carrying the name.

South and Central American Countries ordered or converted many Rifles to 30'06 due to allegiances with the United States and it's use and subsequent supply of .30 US ammunition, later on many of these same and other Countries converted Rifles to 7.62 NATO to comply with membership requirements. (I have a Chilean Mauser that was originally 7mm Mauser that was converted by them into 7.62 shoots great and is brutally accurate for a Military Rifle)

When that photo first appeared and with the assertions of engraved cartridges and spent case, the wonky scope, the closed action, not in an "evidence" container, no towel, etc. that it was bullshit.

ATF relies on Manufacturers and Importers to start the trace engine provided they're still in Business and if not, then it falls to the Digitized Records ATF holds, even then there might not be anything, and as for C&R FFL's, if they do not renew their Licenses, they are told NOT to send their Bound Book to Discontinued Records, but to destroy it.

There's a shit-ton of guns that qualified as "Curio and Relic" before the 50 year rule came into effect, therefor that number increases every year....That's right, that Colt AR-15 SP-1 made in 1975....yea, that's a C&R, and the Government can suck it!

Everything from surplus Military to Factory new commercial, they've been chambered in damn near anything imaginable since the invention of smokeless Powder.

I love the fact the shooter broke down the rifle, wrapped it in a towel, but never wiped the rifle for prints or wear gloves!

according to all the social media firearm quarter backs that can see a bullet in mid flight from a normal security cam ..

now its being reported that there was no exit wound .. so was it a 30-06 or not ..

There are the DMs from Taylor that seem to imply it was a hand me down rifle from his grandfather to his father to him.

Could easily be a 100 year old rifle that someone put a new stock on for one reason or another.

Rechambering in 30-06 was *very* popular for quite a while due to ammo availability.

If it were a restocked old action,
A Russian capture with that scary X carved on the receiver (not to mention the Swastika stamps) would definitely fit their narrative.
