To the OP, No permit needed to buy pistol magazines.
Buying ammo can be a hassle though. Some big box type places like Walmart want to see a pistol permit in order to sell you "pistol" ammo.
It's their stupid ass company policy - Not a law.
Go to an LGS or other retailer for your ammo.
Right. There is that option but if you're buying a complete upper off the shelf, you've got slim pickings unless it's a 24 inch varmint type.

The magazine is detachable but the spring and follower are not captured so I'd guess it's similar to the SKS.
