Interesting thread. My son wants me to go magnet fishing with him. I bought a retrieval magnet which came with some rope, but I feel like I need something stronger in case the magnet hits an old car or something.

Would some stainless steel cable be the way to go?

Nope, wire rope is just too much of a pain to use for stuff like that, just buy the braided rope that is at least the same or more than the tensile strength of the magnet.
