For HD I would go 300 BO if looking for a bigger caliber, all you have to do is get an upper to try out. IMHO 308 for HD is a little bit of over kill.

well i just got off the phone with a local gun store and they have a DPMS lower built, minus the stock for 249. DPMS will sell me a complete upper for 694 and i need a windham stock for 100 so for 1050 i can have myself a very nice 308. why 308 you ask? because 308 like dsdmmat said, its bigger and badder then 556. i don't care for a 556 its such a small round if you think about it. DPMS said they are out of stock until fall and they want 409 for a stripped lower LOL. the guy on the phone said Armalite would be his choice, but then i said i heard they are going under after they sold, and he agreed. So why recommend? Idiot.
I do like the 6.5 but mine is for home defense not 1000m range

It's the same as the .45 ACP argument. It will kill you but it isn't the most optimal compared to other calibers with more speed.
The the most optimal caliber is the one in your hand when you need it. To paraphrase Secretary Rumsfeld " you go to battle with the caliber you have not, the one you wish you had."

Shot placement is much more important than what caliber you use.
Here is a ruger 10/22 (22lr for anyone that doesn't already know) killing many people quickly in a short period of time. It's graphic, but it really doesn't matter what caliber you think is best, because they all do kill. This psychos rifle had no problem taking down everyone VERY quickly and effectively. Some of the comments I read about calibers are so silly, they're embarrassingly cringeworthy. The certain folks that abide by youtube ballistic gelatin test videos, the FBI's protocol, and what their buddies tell them at the range is the best shine often. Don't be "that guy" PLEASE, for the sake of the non believers sanity.
