And just to avoid confusion, that is refund in the sense that I still gave a shitload of $$$ to the government, just a little too much. Not the I gave 1000 and got 2000 back "refund".

It’s not as clear cut as it might seem. Many did not owe income tax. Many had federal taxes withheld . A interest free loan to the US government. Income tax is not only tax we pay. Sales, gas, fees etc. What is the percentage of people who don’t pay income taxes that are children? Or the retired who pay capital gains on retirement investments etc
Taxes paid to social security aren’t considered income taxes either.

I didn't file yet. Max withheld every year, and refund keeps getting smaller and smaller, and ended up paying NY a few extra worthless federal reserve notes last year. I had $8k taken out of a single check recently. If I owe more, it is going to end up costing the government more than it cost me. There is no point in working if the maximum legal withholding is no longer enough. There isn't a single fucking issue that pisses me off more than taxes.
