A school district in Wyoming recently used a gymnasium as a shooting range, training fifth and sixth grade students in marksmanship during PE.

Hot Springs County School District #1, in the small town of Thermopolis, shared photos of the sharpshooting session in a Feb. 2 Facebook post, and it quickly caught the attention of thousands. McClatchy News has obtained a screengrab of the Facebook post, which is no longer publicly available.

What is so wrong with a little bit of marksmanship? After all it is a sport!

When I was in grade school we had the option of marksmanship. Of course I had to take it... No one ever got hurt or anything, and between that and my parents guns are to be respected.

I do summer biathlons every so often and imagine trying to shoot while your heart is pumping 160 BPM after doing a 10k run?

They’re airguns, for Pete’s sake. The only concern I had about this article was lead when I thought it was 22s.

ETA: And I’ve been to Therompolis, it’s a pretty cool town. Well worth a stop if you are driving around the West.

What a wonderful ANCIENT concept ! Reminds me of the era when NY City high schools had rifle teams, yes rifle teams. I specifically attended a particular HS to shoot on their team and the year I started the school dropped the program...

Teaching marksmanship skills to our youth was one reason our military did so well during WW II. Our rural youth grew up learning to shoot to help put dinner on the table and many were excellent marksmen. Many of those skills were lost prior to VN.

Going to be a lot of hungry city folk when the shelves at Walmart are bare. Better pick up some more .22's...

I remember the good old days when people kept their shotgun in the highschool locker to go hunting quail and rabbit after class.
The guns were not a problem then and the guns have not changed that much. Only the people have changed.

I'm not that old, but when I was in grade school, the high school kids would have their 22s and shotguns on the back window rack of their truck with their doors unlocked.

People just way more respect for people's crap back then. Totally different mentality. Although, I live in a small town and uncle Joe will know when you farted -- that was back then. A lot of those old fogies died, and now we get people that come and go and people that don't even know who lives on their street.

I have a feeling with the way things are going, it might end up being you have to know your neighbors just to survive.
