Mental health providers are already required to report you if you're a danger to yourself or others. Which is, mind you, still a violation of doctor / patient privileges.
Mental health insurance will go through the roof for providers. No one will do these in fear they won't be covered. A patient shoots someone and their practice is toast.

40 § 400.25 Purchase of rifles and shotguns.
1. Prior to the purchase of any rifle or shotgun, a person shall apply for a hunting license pursuant to article eleven of the environmental conservation law.

I agree, the SCOTUS is not going to help us.
Their rulings are very narrow and easily "gone around" by determined legislatures.
Unless we can make a law that a Bill must pass constitutional scrutiny BEFORE it passes, we get nothing.
For instance......
Everyone is all giddy about an "assault weapon" ban case.
Why? Here in NYS we are allowed to own them.
If anyone believes the SCOTUS will, in one decision, make all cosmetic features legal, you don't know how the SCOTUS works.
They first have to say these weapons are legal to own....case done.....but we in NY can already own them.
Then you need separate cases for detachable magazines and features. This will literally take decades.
Every AW ban case I've seen presented to the SCOTUS has been for a COMPLETE ban of modern sporting rifles.
That does NOTHING for NYS......in my opinion.
I will caution you to research Aaron Dorr and the "associations" he's created in the past in other States before sending him contributions, ones that only once in the decade that he's been here. (well a Mail Boxes Etc. in Victor, NY) ever actually made it to Court (and I'm not sure that case represented by Paloma(sp) even got that far.
The ASSembly comes up with all sorts of bullshit like this, often shooting for the Moon with satisfaction just getting a piece of it passed through Committee and then Ways and Means, so while we have to be vigilant and keep pressure on both sides, most all of it comes down to Money: Money to fight the Bill and Money to get it passed.
Unless you've got standing and at least two million dollars to spend, SCOTUS isn't likely to grant certiorari

For High School kids to participate in Trap or other Shooting sports, they have to complete the Hunter Safety Course...buying a Licenses is optional (IIRC). The demand to purchase a Hunting Licenses before being allowed to buy a Gun in NY has been floated around for years and in true incremental fashion, may well be implemented.for those that don't know this course can be done online

I've carped on this before and will again: We're dealing with the NYC B.L.A.C. Caucus, and these folks only see the City and crime associated with it, they are largely ignorant (literally) and care not for "hunting" as that's what the Rednecks and hicks upstate do, and since we're considered the minority in both Republican Representation and Population, our Rights and Laws effecting us are of little to no consideration.
Should ever the opportunity present, one should actually sit and talk to our Representatives about what goes on in the Legislature, at least then you'll understand why weapons are prohibited there.

Whole entire set of legalities and liabilities of a mental health provider needs to say you’re fit to have a gun. Not many of any would put their life on the line to say you can buy a gun.

We're permitted to own a neutered version. But not the real thing. NY's law is still a "gun ban case" if it were ever brought to court.
I doubt you need to get so granular.
It's already been said that even a law restricting magazine size is a "gun ban case". All SCOTUS needs to do is rule that the 2nd protects ALL items that can be used for offense or defense (gee....didn't they do that already?) and it's over.

I'm not buying shotguns and rifles to hunt.
And having to take that course EVERY TIME I want to buy a new shotgun or rifle is complete bullshit!

Every case I've read over the last 10 years has dealt with complete AW bans, like the Snopes case and what's happening in Illinois.
These cases will ONLY decide if Americans are able to own AWs. Here in NY, we are allowed to own and buy them.
This is why there are separate cases dealing with magazine bans, suppressor bans......
Cosmetic features are not part of a single case I've seen presented for Cert in recent years.
So, if during the court case the defendants say "ok, we will allow AW like NY", the case will become moot, and be dismissed.
Otherwise the SCOTUS could just say all guns, all parts, all the time.....thats not how these cases work from my understanding.
I get my information mostly from Anthony Miranda and Mark Smith, who knows more about how this works than most people.
Again, this is the information they are sharing after decades of experience in these cases.
And no, they will never make a law saying you can have ALL items that can be used offensively or defensively. That is what the 2nd says, but the anti gunners will test each item, which can take years.
This is why we have had cases dealing with pepper spray, body armor, stun guns, auto knives...sinse Heller.
Oh and, not being able to ban "entire classes of guns", NYS legal rifles and Texas legal rifles are in the same "class".
So, NY has not banned a class of firearms, they banned features.
We don't have an AW ban, we have a features ban, which are not covered in any current AW case before SCOTUS.

Last time I read the law it defined "assault weapon" as a semi-auto with certain features, which it then banned.
We cannot own "assault weapons" (as defined by the Democrats) in NY.
We can only own limited semi-auto rifles/shotguns.
A semi-auto with a detachable magazine is a "class of firearm". Even if you're using the same receivers as one with a detachable magazine.
It is, at its core, a "gun ban".
