This is the story that I was referencing.Howver, after re-reading it I misunderstood the statement that the chief made regarding the people who were dead. Thank god. I'm glad to stand corrected and hear that the Good Samaritan is alive and well.

State Trooper Shot in Ambush — And a Good Guy with a Gun Is the Reason He'll Live to Tell the Tale

A DAY AGO
Trooper was responding to a call early Thursday morning when he happened upon what appeared to be a rollover accident. He stopped to investigate, which is when he was blind-sided by a man with a gun.
The man shot the officer at least once in the shoulder/chest area, and then proceeded to throw him to the ground. He continued his physical assault until another motorist happened by.
The motorist got out of his vehicle and approached, and upon hearing the officer call for help, went back to his vehicle for his gun. He asked the suspect to stop attacking the officer, and when he refused, the man opened fire.
And then Dispatch got the call...
“Hello, officer down, officer down outside Tonopah! Come in please... He's in real bad shape. Please send air support, helicopter please... There are also two civilians on the road, also laying, unknown condition...”
The dispatcher quickly realized that the call was coming from a civilian and that it was not a prank, and other units were sent to the scene.
The officer, whose condition was serious but stable, was airlifted to a local hospital where he was treated for both the gunshot wound and head injuries resulting from having his head repeatedly bashed into the ground.
Colonel Frank Milstead of Arizona DPS shared his thanks on Twitter:
And Milstead noted that the hardest thing was going to be piecing together what had happened leading up to the shooting: “Everyone who knows what happened is dead, except for my trooper.”

UPDATE: The man who shot and severely beat an Arizona state trooper last week was a former member of the Mexican federal police who was in the country illegally, authorities said.

"Evidence coming in now is suggesting that the man who attacked the trooper had been shooting at other vehicles prior to the woman crashing, suggesting the deceased suspect may have taken her life before he attacked the DPS trooper.
According to DPS Col. Frank Milstead, a citizen called to report that their vehicle was shot at from the median near milepost 81 on Interstate 10.
It is not known how many vehicles the suspect shot at before the wreck and shooting the officer. It’s quite possible that if the suspect had managed to kill the trooper, he would have resumed his prior position and ambushed other first responders coming to the scene, as the trooper was not able to send out a warning."

This story has been jumbled from the start. Did the motorist from the accident die? Various iterations have had every involved party dying. Literally, I've read stories which have them all dead, the cop dead, the perp dead, the good samaritan dead, the original driver dead, or some mix of the lot of them.
