Best .22 semi auto

I am looking to buy a semi auto .22 pistol for me and my kids to shoot. I want one that looks like a real gun not a BB gun. So I would like to exclude ruger marks, buck marks, and the victory. I am safe with guns, but feel these look kind of fake. I really like the browning black label 1911, but $600 for a 22 seems ridiculous. I'd like it to be reliable and shoot whatever ammo is available so nothing finicky. I have looked at the sw mp.22, ruger sr22, and the walther p22. All seem to get good reviews. I like that the walther has the steel spring guide rod the ruger is plastic. I'm not sure about the sw. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks guys. Also I'd be willing to buy a used one if anyone has one for a descent price. Also I'm looking just for plinking and some point and shoot training. I carry a Springfield xd so the sw is probably the closest to that.

Clone this fixed mag and drop in a 22 conversion bolt.

Try the Ruger SR22 if you don't like the looks of the MKs. The plastic guidrod has an aftermarket replacement if you don't like it. The gun shoots really well and has good ergonomics to boot.

I have heard great things about both the SR22 and the M&P 22. I have the SR22 and it's a terrific pistol. I have never had any issues with it and has not been ammo sensitive at all - fires everything I give it. Very accurate and a blast to shoot. If I train new shooters that's the first pistol I put in their hands. They now have a version with a longer barrel which looks good. As I said I've heard good things about the M&P but I have not yet used one.

Thanks. I was leaning towards the sr22, but then saw the plastic guide rod and I'm just not a fan of anything plastic except frames on my ccw. I guess I'll just see what I can find cheaper. Where's darth on the walther??

Good to hear. It's seems like they are both about $300.00. It seems a lot of the sw mp 22 comes with a threaded barrel. Not sure, but I thought threaded barrels on pistols were illegal in New yorkistan.

I have the Walther .22 and it's a nice pistol for my son to shoot. Not too heavy, thumb safety, and decockable hammer. I'm not aware of any threaded barrel on mine.

I'm not saying your wrong because that was my understanding is threaded barrels were a no no, but that reference can't be right because it says we can't have .22 1911 style pistols. I see no problem for that. Again I'm not saying your wrong about the threaded barrel just walther is erring on the side of caution like a lot of companies are doing.

Also I know they make a nonthreaded barrel version of these pistols, but I just happened to see a lot of threaded barrel versions relatively cheap on gun broker. That's why I asked. I'll have to ask my ffl. I'm in no hurry just want one before spring plinking happens. So 2 months. Also yes I'd really like a semi auto for my own training purposes.

No offense, but yes it looks similar to my kids BB guns. I just want them to be able to distinguish between them easily. Just like I won't buy them a BB gun that looks like the .22 pistol I buy. I'm not insulting the size of your dick it's just my preference and an additional safety measure. Sure I might be taking it one step too far, but safety is #1. I know they are real guns and probably better and more accurate than the ones I'm looking at buying. It's just my preference for what my purpose is.

I've been shooting the SR22 for 4 years and never had any problems with it. Fun to shoot and it eats all brands of ammo I feed it
