Hi guys,

I am a new member from Franklin county. Still hasn't applied for pistol permit yet so I wanted to buy something just as cool. An AR-15.

I don't want neutered "non character" rifle and would rather get a AR-15 with fixed mag. Few questions regarding it.

1) I know there are simple kits that I can install to make Mag fixed. Can I buy AR-15 and install it myself and I am good to go?

2) Or, should I have the FFL do it for me.


3) Lastly, I have been thinking of getting Colt LE6920? Any thoughts about it? It has mixed review but I thought it may be the best one around $1000 budget? Any thoughts?

You can make a fixed AR yourself, but you cannot buy a non-fixed that is otherwise non compliant and fix it because the second it's in your possession it's an illegal "assault weapon".

Dealers in NY will only sell ARs already with fixed mag OR a featureless AR; in either case they are both compliant.

I'd recommend getting one with a thordsen stock. Fixed mag in an AR is far more neutering of it than any change to the grip or lack of muzzle device--at least as your first one. Thordsen with a detachable mag.

A LGS will not sell you a non-compliant AR15 unless you have creds. So forget about buying the gun and doing it yourself.
Keep in mind if you find something online, many out of State retailers won't ship it to NY & many LGS won't accept the transfer.
You can try to find a LGS to do the fix mag conversion before purchasing/transfer.

While building your own is my preference and FB this is your first experience with an AR pattern rifle buy a complete compliant one from your LGS. This way you can become familiar with it and rely on the dealer the unlikely event you have any issues with it.

Do you have any experience with firearms? A place to shoot? If not look around for local clubs/ranges and get someone to walk you through operations. Be safe and have fun.

In my opinion, like others said, go with a featureless detachable mag first. If the situation ever arises, you will be able to reload quickly with a simple mag change if you keep a few full mags laying around.

As with most people who have AR’s, you will not be content with just one or two or even five. After the first one, then build or buy a full featured fixed mag.

I have a few featureless with a detachable mag for home defense and predator hunting. I use a full feature fixed mag for deer hunting and range fun where a quick reload is not necessary.

A fixed mag AR is a much more neutered AR than a featureless AR. I also vote for getting a featureless with the Thordsen stock first. Once you become familiar with the platform, you can build yourself a fixed mag AR lower for very cheap. Anyone with an 8th grade education can build an AR so don't let building intimidate you.

Unless you're familiar with an AR, its inner workings and why/how it malfunctions, featureless is the way to go.
Fixed mag can be a PITA for dealing with malfunctions.

Thanks guys! Seems like I have to pop the cherry with the featureless. But, my gosh, some of those NY compliant AR-15 looks hideous.

When it comes to NY ar15s.. might as well assemble it.

Get a good lower and upper (I always suggest Aero) what ever LPK, find a good good barrel, and choose either thordson stock or other similar option. Or if this is just for fun bs gun get as permperman mag lock you can (worse case it holds up in court, best case somehow features bans are magically over turned in the courts and you are our a lower receiver oh no boo hoo) and use the Mean Arms MA loader or Bear Arms Loader

2 you need to decide if you want to go featureless and actually have the rifle function how it should, or, go fixed and have the rifle look normal but operate like it's neutered.

Either way the best route us to do it yourself especially in this god foresaken state. Youtube will teach you everything you need to know if not we can help. I promise the idea of building a lower is far more intimidating than actually doing it. It's not bad at all and it's rewarding.

You got some good advice from folks on this forum. Here's my thoughts. I decided to go with a fixed 10 round magazine and I bought a couple of BF-10 speed loaders from Bear Flag Defense. The magazine has a 5 round limiter so I can use the rifle for hunting, or take the limiter out when I go to the range. I can reload just about as quickly as if I was doing a mag change. The downside is that the reloaders are about twice the cost of a magazine. I personally wanted an AR with all teh AR features. If I get a double feed I can just pop off the bottom of the magazine to unload it. I have not had any issues so far. I bought a Savage MSR Recon in .223 Wylde for a little over $800. That's the base price with only the included iron sights which I removed. The scope was extra as was the bipod, the light, the forward grip, the offset backup iron sights, etc., etc., etc. When I was done adding everything, including a case, sling, ammo and reloaders, I was around $1,500. So be prepared! I personally went with a fixed mag becasue if the NY law ever changes or I move out of state or I want to sell the rifle it can easily be converted back to a removable magazine. Just my thoughts. PS - The tripod mount was something I made mysef for $10 from a sling swivel adapter and a tripod quick release.

You could get any AR15 you want and put in a Tier 5 Solutions bolt catch. All it does is make it so the bolt locks back after every round. Release the bolt and chamber the next round. I have one on my AR and it works great. non of that fixed magazine or no pistol grip.
