I have 2 1911s, one of which is 9MM. I bought it for the sole purpose that ammo is cheaper. It’s still fun to shoot and the weight of the 5” barrel keeps the nose from jumping around when shooting.

The Yankee Marshal says the .45 ACP isn't bad but it does nothing better than other calibers. I agree. It's too slow. It lacks penetration in both soft tissue and hard barriers compared to other calibers because there just isn't enough case capacity to push that heavy projectile past 750 to 800 fps unless you use a 5 inch barrel and even then you are looking at 900 fps the most. All calibers from 38 Special on up beat it in penetration on both hard barriers and soft tissue.

The Underwood Xtreme Defender seems to be a good choice in a full size or Commander size 1911 45acp with 1300 to 1360 fps, good barrier penetration, and decent subsequent gel performance.

I was shooting milk jugs and clay pigeons. I would be willing to bet you that my 1911, .45 ACP will not only penetrate my truck door, but will exit out the other one. You win, you get to laugh your ass off, I win, you buy two new doors, matching paint, installed, a case of Bud, and I get to laugh my ass off. I'll PM my address if your interested, and you will have to have enough cash, held by a neutral observer, to cover the fix. I don't do frying pans, my wife would flatten my head.

45 may not penetrate barriers the best but that is not always a bad thing. Think about collateral damage..... Plus good 45 ammo expands to 1 inch and still penetrates 14.5 inches.
As far as 10mm 1911s they are great but the two guys I know that had the Colt didnt have the best of luck with them.

A 45acp serves its purpose just fine for a handgun that is carried for self defense and used at the range. I think anyone who doesn't believe it's worthy should volunteer for scientific purposes and be shot by a full magazine worth of 45acp in a 1911. After they're alive and well, they can list immediately on a note pad provided to them the following,
1. How did it feel?
2. How many pints of blood have you lost thus far?
3. How's the organ failure thing working out?
4. It was only going 750-900fps, you're alright... right?
5. Would you try this again?
6. Not enough penetration, right?
7. How does this test compare to shooting a frying pan?
8. Where would you like to be buried and your funeral held?

Sure it kills naked flesh but that isn't the issue. A .380 will as well assuming it hits a vital. The issue is barriers and that's why no modern Police department fields it in large numbers.
