• "There hasn’t been a refinery built in this country since the 1970s," Wirth said at Bernstein's Strategic Decisions Conference this week, when asked about the prospect of new capacity being added in the Gulf of Mexico. "I personally don’t believe there will be a new petroleum refinery ever built in this country again."
• "Capacity is added by de-bottlenecking existing units by investing in existing refineries," he explained. "But what we’ve seen over the last two years are shutdowns. We’ve seen refineries closed. We’ve seen units come down. We’ve seen refineries being repurposed to become bio refineries. And we live in a world where the policy, the stated policy of the U.S. government is to reduce demand for the products that refiners produce."

It's being forced on the WHOLE fUSA by Maoist politicians when it can not possibly work.

Anyone who really, truly believes the fUSA, and other Western countries, can go "carbon neutral" by 2030, without paying a heavy price in lives and standard of living, hasn't been thinking critically.

There's a huge difference between "I choose to Go Green for me and my family on our property" and...

"You WILL accept "Green Energy", Comrades, because we say so...OR...off to the gulag!!!

Wind and solar is great, if you also add adequate storage and distribution infrastructure.

You also can't quadruple your demand before you have installed the wind and solar and infrastructure.


Nobody is saying we shouldn't pursue wind and solar as part of the grid. We are saying the people pushing it and EVs right now are doing it irresponsibly and are lying to the public about the real cost and timeline.

Solar on a small scale works, and works well in places with LOTS of sun. Large scale solar takes up hundreds of acres of land. I have seen solar farms in the south west, near Yuma AZ, that was a square mile.. But those systems cost a fortune, because they track the sun, and they get sun 8 to 10 hours of completely cloudless sky, 355 days a year.

I have solar/batteries on my off grid cabin, I have solar on my Escape Pod (Thor Magnitude XG32) they work great. But the panels in the Adirondacks, right now, are covered with a lovely coating of yellow pollen. In the winter, they work great, as long as they aren't covered in snow, or half covered in snow. But solar is expensive to install. On top of that, you get the NEC (National Electrical Code) involved, now your expense are through the roof. And most municipalities will not let you go "off grid", you MUST have a grid-tie system, WITHOUT BATTERIES. So the government negates the entire point of solar. People want their lights on when the power goes out, even at 3am. If you don't have or can't have a battery bank backup, whats the point of installing solar, other than reducing your utility bill, that the utility company is going to give you a VERY hard time about. There is a Bar in the middle of the AZ desert called the Nellie E Saloon, The Desert Bar, look it up. The entire establishment is run on Solar. But hes in the middle of a desert that gets sun 10 hours a day. solar is only practicable on individual homes, south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Iowa has tens of thousands of wind generator. Literally, drive down rt-90 and you'll see miles of them. The damn things are enormous. But, as far as I could tell, everyone of them was spinning, were they generating electricity?? who knows?.

95% of residential solar installations are on grid only. When commercial power goes out, so do your lights, even in the middle of the day.

They are only good for reducing your electric bill, and virtue signaling.

Cost about doubles if you want it to work when the grid is down, and a lot of installers won't even do those.

The trouble with our system in Washington is they want to destroy everything that has worked for over years and force us to transfer over to systems not really ready for prime time . Talked to a fellow that had both solar and wind .. Claimed wind was better for upstate NY. . ... Walk into a HOA and see if they will allow a tower with a windmill in your back yard. . See how far one gets. Lets have green energy but not where I can see it produced.

Some wind farms spend more on the litigation and permitting than they do on the actual turbines.

I remember driving through the southern tier one day and passing a house that had "no wind turbines" and "no fracking" signs in their yard.

But their lights were on.


The renewables are great, and we absolutely should pursue the technology. The grid is absolutely not ready for them to take more than a small part of the load though.

I don't think scaling battery storage up is the solution for that either.

Maybe the best we can do right now would be to just idle the fossil fuel plants when the wind and solar are available, but keep them on standby ready to fire up as soon as the clouds come out. Realistically that could drop our fossil fuel use by 50%.

Pretending 0% fossil fuel use is a realistic goal is keeping us from intelligently pursuing a realistic policy now.


Plus, we're pretty much installing wind and solar and building EVs as fast as we can now.

The distribution grid is the neglected part of this puzzle. It's not sexy, and it's taken for granted by everyone. We're pushing it near collapse already. Adding greater demands to it via intermittent power sources, and huge new loads is just a recipe for collapse.


If the government wanted to increase the rollout of renewables it should GTFO the way, rather than offering incentives. and by GTFO the way I mean stop letting every whiny NIMBYer tie the projects up for years in litigation. Set clear unambiguous requirements for the siting and then bring the hammer down on anyone trying to stop them with frivolous lawsuits.

Don’t wanna be forced into green energy, but you want the govt to “bring the hammer down on anyone trying to stop them.” Sounds like everyone wants the same things, but we all have different ideas about how to get there, how soon, and how expensive. Imagine that? A common goal with different viewpoints on how to achieve it. The original idea of American political discourse. If only more people would talk to “the other side” they’d see how it’s all mostly the same side of the stadium, just different seats.

I've been contemplating solar and/or wind for years. I don't give a shit about saving the environment, I care about producing my own energy. I have a strong desire to be able to exist outside of the system 'cause I don't trust it. I might even buy an electric car if I own enough generation to feed it. Don't think I want to make the investment while I still live in NY though.
