Choke tube question

I have a Remington 870 Express Tactical 12 guage that has the tactical choke tube extension on it. I want to change it out for a flush fitting choke tube.
I am looking on Midway and they list either a Rem-choke or a Pro-bore option. Anyone know which one I need? Also I'm thinking improved cylinder is the way to go for a mostly home defense gun and occasional wild predator defense gun. From what I read improved tightens up buckshot a little while still being wide enough to safely fire a slug through the barrel. Is this right? I don't know a lot about choke tubes. Thanks.

What about improved vs full? Also do I need a choke tube wrench to install it or can I use a coin or some other tool around the house to get it in?

You don’t want a full choke for slugs. If for home defense, IC is the correct choke. A quarter should work fine.

I would test them out. Can’t hurt to have a different choke tube in the house

Thanks. I had the meaning of full choke backwards. I thought it was the widest not the narrowest. So I will get the improved and that will give me nice groups of buckshot and still be safe for slugs?

Improved is the safest for your barrel with slugs. This is for home defense right? Improved will be fine for buckshot as most home defense situations are 10 yds or less

Yes home defense and maybe an emergency defense gun for 4 legged critters while in the woods or something like that. Although I might use the Shockwave for that. I don’t believe those accept a choke tube. The biggest reason is I want the flush appearance and I’m not going to be breaching any doorways so I don’t need that on there.

I would have to think that hitting someone at 10 yards with 00 buck would drop them like a sack of potatoes!

10 yds away almost any choke will look the same. Most buckshot is buffered and the choke makes huge differences at longer ranges. I know most people say get an improved or cylinder. My 1100 likes the 28" full choke barrel with 3" Winchester super x 4 buck. Good 50 yd coyote gun. My 870 likes the 28" barrel with the .068 choke with 3.5" Winchester and Remington 00 buck. I've shot a coyote at 85 yds and have patterned it out to 100. I did not expect it to shoot that good. It's made for buckshot but that is really tight. The cylinder bore like a shockwave needs the federal flight control buckshot to hold a group at all. You really just need to try a few chokes and see what you like for what your doing. At 10 yds they are all basically the same. After that is where the difference comes in. What the maximum needed distance is what matters to me. If Im hunting coyotes and I have a rifle and shotgun I take the 1100 and know anything inside of 50 I got covered and if need be I have the rifle. When it's shotgun only I take the pump. It works every time and I might need that extra distance. Everything I do is set up for hunting. I'm not into the close range combat. Don't think having even an extra 1" at 10 yds is going to make a difference. If your max you will need the gun for is 40yds then any choke could work. And you can fire lead foster slugs thru just about any choke. So my vote is to get a few chokes and try them out. Remchokes on eBay don't cost much. But if you plan on hunting coyote or being able to hit one past 40 yds your going to need to shoot a few different shells thru it and see what it likes. Flight control likes the open chokes. Most buckshot I've tried actually likes tight chokes in my guns. Ymmv
