collector question

In my search for an EDC i got really interested in some of the works of art called customs. the problem is the the cost of some of these works of art would be a bit of a stretch for my finances. dropping 1500$ for a knife maybe something i can justify if I can convince myself these art works will potentially appreciate in value (or at least wont depreciate). Is this the case? For those you that collect do these knifes hold value and/or appreciate in value. Or is this like every other hobby i get into where i spend millions and sell for peanuts? i really want to invest in one of these pieces of art.

The most I ever spent on a knife was $1,200. I was lucky enough to grab a brand new Tom Mayo. I ended up selling it because it was just too expensive to even consider using. I now switch off between 3 knives that I carry and they range from $400-$600 each. That's my limit for an EDC knife.

I have yet to buy one in hopes that they will go up in value, but I could have sold the Mayo for more than I paid but that is not my style.

At a certain price, you are paying for the name, just like most collectables.
Look and see what makers are in demand and get in line. Alot of these guys have 2 plus years waiting list.
I totally get the collector thing, ive spent a small fortune on smoking pipes. Ive spent $1000 on a single pipe and that was a steal.
As far as appreciating, that depends on how many knives a certain guy has made. Some guys make 200 knives a year and some make 30 knives a year. The 30 knife guy will be in higher demand, so his knives will appreciate.
Once a maker has died, his pieces will appreciate remarkably.......so buy from old guys

Also, do not fall for "limited edition" or "collectors edition", these are usually just marketing ploys.
Find a knife collectors forum and see whos in demand.

If you don't want to spend that kind of money on a single knife, check out either Chris Reeve's Sebenza's or Rick Hinderer's XM-18. I have owned a few of each. The Sebenza is what got me hooked.

I'm almost in love with Hinderer's with wharncliffe blade. I don't like how frame locks only have scales on the one side.

Arizonacustomknives.com probably has the largest selection of knives on the planet. Strangely enough, they are based in Florida. Check the drop-down menu for list of makers. I have dealt with them a few times, - the longest time it ever took to notify me that my knife has been shipped was 24 minutes. REALLY. --

I've stopped a few times into Smokey Mountain Knife Works in Sevierville, Tennessee and drooled about a few when I was traveling for work.
