Finished "Pay it Forward" knife project with son..pics...

Many thanks to our member (S&W Fan)'s Pay it Forward to my son & I. Here's the way it started out .. A freebie from the PIF thread that S&W Fan mailed to us for free.



Then we went to work...Using an old deer leg bone my son found in the woods near us, as the main handle, along with two pieces of the burl wood and a slice of leather in between for detail....Glued & clamped them..









After shaping the wood & leather to the bone handle...



Finished product. Son's 1st home-made knife and he learned some great skills along the way..

JB Weld clear epoxy & sawdust to thicken it up. Seemed to work great. Its rock solid. Home Depot has it. Let it dry a full 24 hours before we messed with it.

Where are you getting the knife blanks from? I’d like to do one or two of these.

First one was a freebie via "Pay It Forward" here, generously donated by S&WFan. The second one was a man-cave clean out from a buddy who said to take it, as he'd never get around to it...The antler chunk also came from S&WFan.

Where are you getting the knife blanks from? I’d like to do one or two of these.

I’ve picked up a few knife blanks here and there from premiumknifesupply.inc on Ebay. He sells good steel at reasonable prices. There are a few others that sell on there as well that are good. I just can’t think of the names at the moment.

Are you going to stabilize the antler prior to use or after you shape it?

Good question. Might search for a 1/4” disc of solid brass to cap the bottom, then polish it bright. Son also wants to make that little nub/offshoot into a finger loop. We’ll see. Forgot how much antler stinks when you machine it. Phew!

Stink it does! I usually wear a paper filter mask when I’m cutting / sanding antler and bone. That stuff isn’t good at all for the lungs.

I’ve made a lot of knives over the years, using antler for handles, both from steel and mostly flint knapped stone. I always tried to maintain the integrity of the antler wheneve possible. There were times when little protrusions worked to make a nice grip on the handle and then there were times where it was just damn uncomfortable. He should hold the piece of antler in different ways first to see what will work best for the knife that will eventually be made.
Nice to see that you got two projects out of the Karma.
