Per this post: Beikirch is closing/moving to Henrietta.
I recently won a New-In-Box Ruger SR1911 in 10mm and an Iver Johnson Top-Break Revolver in .38 cal - I made a range trip yesterday and here are my first impressions. (forgot to take pictures and about to leave for work, use Google/Bing/Duckduckgo image search)
First up, the Iver Johnson Revolver! I'm not really a fan of revolvers, but I appreciate the history of them, and a 'Top Break' is a neat aspect of it. (Even my fiancé responded with "like the gun Hellboy uses?" LOL.. yes but not that big) This one I won cheap ($100), it was used and it's in.. not good shape. Exterior nickel plating is peeling, inside of the cylinder and barrel is rusted - but I cleaned it up as well as I could and didn't plan to shoot it much anyway.
I brought it to the range with some .38 Special..... AND then found out the cartridges were too big. Huh. Then I looked at the gun auction paperwork - ".38 caliber"... dumb me forgot there are more ".38" versions than there are made-up genders. (.38 short, .38 long, .38 cal, .38 Special, .38 Super....)
I'll order some plain ".38 caliber" and give it a go again next month. I've thought about ordering a new cylinder, but at about $30 it's 1/3 the cost of the gun itself...
Now onto the big boy - Ruger SR1911 in 10mm. I did not expect to win this.. but I did. I ordered some various 10mm rounds and almost decided to keep it 'new' - but what fun would that be...
In a day or two I'll post up pictures, but the SR1911 in 10mm matches my SR1911 in .45 dimension wise and looks (both have 5" long barrels), except the .45 has a stainless-colored barrel and the 10mm is black. I shot them side by side at the range to see the difference, and boy is there. It's got a nice amount of kick, though I still find it more controllable than my .357 Magnum Ruger SP101. (I did some rapid-fire, putting 8 rounds into a 3-inch group at about 10 feet)
I may add some griptape to the front of the grip - in the 90+ degree heat yesterday it was getting a little slippery. (the factory rubber grip panels were very nice though) The trigger has a smooth break, though I may look into replacing, I'm not a fan of the 'texture' of either SR1911's triggers - it is slightly ridged with a small hole (to adjust trigger over-travel I believe), but it kept rubbing my finger wrong. (with enough shooting maybe I'd get a callous and not notice!)
I went through 50 rounds of SIG Sauer 180 gr FMJ and 25 rounds of Sellier & Bellot 180 gr FMJ - I also have some Underwood "bear hunting" rounds and Speer Gold Dot 200 gr rounds I'll shoot next month. Zero malfunctions so far.
Probably the only complaint (besides the lack of front grip checkering, though this isn't a high-end 1911) is the way the slide is removed, you need to use a small 'paperclip-like' piece to hold the full-length guide-rod spring on. Makes disassembly in the field difficult....
