One thing I don’t miss down here in the Carolina’s? Police roadblocks for so called safety checks. Since I left New Yorkistan for NC back in 2018, I have YET to see one here.
When I lived and worked in OP, the cops used to run them all the time. They used to set them up on stretches of roads where it was difficult to turn around or otherwise avoid them. And they specifically used them to make money for the town government (and by extension, their own salaries and budgets).
Safety checkpoint my ass. Just a damn money grab.
IIRC, Orchard Park used to collect a few hundred thousand dollars per year doing that. Traffic court night was a regular shitshow. A quickly run fleecing. The line (which I also got caught in a couple of times) used to run the length of the hallways, and out the building at times. I have seen as many as 200-300 people there at times. And due to NY’s little loophole where they have pretty much everyone plead down from moving violations to multiple “parking tickets”, they got to keep most of the money,- excluding the obligatory NY state surcharges.
One of the locations they used to set up was a short distance down from my office. One time after they got me for some minor bullshit, I had had enough. I owned a 16’ box van for work. I took an old banner and painted on it ”DANGER! Police Fundraising Ahead. Turn around here”. I hung it on my truck, and backed it up as close to the road as I could, so that people driving toward the roadblock could see it and avoid it.
The cops were not happy. One drove down, pulled into my parking lot to “discuss it with me“, and asked me to take it down. He told me that I was causing people to avoid their roadblock.
I replied “Good. Glad to know that!” Then, I told him to get his cruiser off my property,- and don’t come back. Ten minutes later they folded up shop and left.
I hated them pulling that shit. For a small town that used to be patrolled by 4 cop cars total, they have pushed their force up to over 50 officers,- and that excludes the dispatchers who are civilians. Civilians who, by the way, I was told by people in the OPPD, all got their pistol permits rushed through the Erie County PPO. Because, they’re special, don’t you know. Because sitting behind that bullet proof glass is so dangerous! Supposedly, they got their CCW’s right away, while the average Schmuck in Erie County was waiting 1-2 years for their CCW.
And one more thing about that: How is it that CIVILIANS (NOT sworn officers) are allowed to carry OPENLY in a Police Station / Town Hall / Courthouse??? You or I would be arrested on the spot - likely at gunpoint- if we did that. WTF???

And oh, they exhibit the enforcement of LAW over political agenda! And yes, the NEWS media is programmed and embrace the Progressive Agenda fully...
I haven't seen any around here in a while. I assumed they stopped doing them after so many people started complaining(rightfully so) that they're illegal since you can't stop someone that's not doing anything wrong.They had one here last week

They used to make every motorcycle pull into the rest stop by exit 18 on the northway during Americade. That only lasted 2 years because riders were going after them for being targeted since they were only stopping bikes.
