Provided Hillary doesn't start a civil war or nuke someplace... I may fly again. I know the fancy noise reduction headphones are tuned to reduce airplane engine noise. But what about our electronic shooting ear muffs? Any noise cancellation benefit or are they only designed to cancel loud gunshots?

They work by attenuating sounds above a certain threshold - for example everything above 100dB get clamped down 30dB (not real numbers.)
I assume the more sophisticated systems have the ability to change that threshold. Most have a volume knob.
When I am on a plane - where I spend too much of my life, I prefer to not do anything that might affect the equilibrium of pressure in my head/sinus cavities. So no form fitting headphones, no ear plugs, and a fair amount of chewing gun. Your body is amazing in that after 20 or so minutes unless you are wired up or freaking out the aircraft engine noises fade to the background, like my tinnitus does.

For some flights I use my triple flange ear plugs I use at the range. I have also had very good success with noise canceling headphones for general music listening.

Just get a good pair of noise isolating earbuds and be done with it, or shell out for the Bose QC-15 noise cancelling headset.
