Less than an hour after the president-elect announced his selection of retired Marine Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) said she’d vote against the waiver that will be required for him to serve.
“While I deeply respect General Mattis’s service, I will oppose a waiver,” Gillibrand said in a statement, referring to the law that prevents those on active military duty within the last seven years from serving in the civilian post.
The swift objection from New York’s junior senator comes just weeks after she began signaling possible interest in running for president in 2020.
Page Six reported last month that Gillibrand has been calling Clinton’s biggest donors to discuss “the direction of the country.”
“She isn’t directly asking donors about her chances in 2020, but it is implied,” one source told Page Six.
