Man shot dead in IPD Headquarters lobby had criminal history and was homeless

Michael DeCastro had a recent history of public lewdness and harassment charges. He was accused of engaging in lewd behavior in The Quality Inn lobby.

Police say DeCastro entered the police department lobby at 120 E. Clinton St. just before 6:30 a.m. Saturday. He then attacked the officer who answered the door.

The officer shot and killed Castro.

That officer sustained minor injuries, was treated at a regional medical center and has since been released. The officer's identity has not been released.

Police are requesting from the public in order to determine DeCastro's motive for his attack on the police officer.
