how heavy (AR buffer)

building a carbine..............looking to use the JP tuned/polished extra power buffer spring( supposed to be pretty smooth and cut down on the ''twang'')

This will have a Stag 16'' bbl w/ carbine gas ..............what buffer/and what weight does the clan recommend ? Does anyone recommend oiling/greasing the buffer spring ?

I'm no expert, but from my previous research I saw most people recommending the heaviest buffer that the gun can fully cycle reliably. So I would guess that you would benefit from a H2 or H3 (actually that's probably too heavy) buffer over a standard carbine buffer.

Does your buffer spring specs recommend anything? It could've been made to work better with certain weights?

Also, it's usually recommended to either leave the spring dry or use only dry lube if you'd like to have less twang. Wet lube probably wouldn't cause real problems, but it causes grime to stick more.

No need to oil buffer spring. Why wouldn't you go with a standard carbine buffer? Rifle designed to work that way. Build it up to spec and if you have problems diagnose from there.

A standard buffer is totally fine, but if your rifle cycles well with a heavier buffer it will be softer shooting and the extra mass is said to help with bolt closing under very fouled conditions.

I don't remember reading any downsides as long as you test and make sure it's always reliable.

I'm currently running back and forth between Primary Arms and here w/ you guys !! LOL I'm going to give the Anderson arms 3 oz. buffer a shot......it's only $11.00 and the JP spring is about $20.00

Also going w/ Magpul h/g and the fixed carbine stock ( I think, still trying to determine it's LOP)

Sounds good, any standard weight buffer (3oz) will function well for you. No need to get anything heavier unless you want to experiment with recoil impulse. Good luck with the build!

I really do appreciate the help.....seems good to be putting something together again, I've always used fixed stock a1 rifle stock.and stock buffer. I wanted to try something else. Using a BulletGuy FUC lower !!

A chrome silicon spring is the way to go. Its $6 on damage industries. It took that twang an crunch sound right out

If you want softer shooting, get a rifle gas system.

Run a regular buffer and a regular spring. Dont over think/engineer it.

if you really want some good info, watch this:
but as BG said, standard carbine spring and buffer if you are running a carbine gas system, .223/5.56, with a mil-spec m-16 BCG. if you are building something with a lightweight bolt carrier or anything that might be oddball, you may want to change your buffer configuration.

Just one gripe is he's saying don't change anything, but he's talking to professionals with high end rifles (probably with 14.5" barrels). Most of us are using 16" barrels and possibly cheaper manufacturers who may overgas their systems to err on the side of reliability. I'm saying just because it comes from a factory set up a certain way, that doesn't mean it's the ideal set up. Very informative video though.

he clearly points out that the info applies to everyone, especially the "run the heaviest buffer you can" crowd, the purpose of the heavier buffers are to stop carrier bounce for full auto rifles, (which doesn't apply to the majority of people), or on short stroke gas piston rifles.

the solution to an overgassed rifle is not a heavier buffer or stiffer spring, the solution is a properly sized gas port and gas block.

I'm using AllStar's heavy buffer in my build, if it makes a difference. I believe it's at 4.5oz, I also got their enhanced buffer spring too. When I actually get it together, I'll let you know what I think of it. They also sell a 5.5oz one too, but I didn't think I could reliably cycle with that weight.
