How to reduce recoil

1st off I already know I’m going to get a lot of shit for asking this. Pussy, wuss, gay, be a man and whatever else you can think of lol.

I have a Mossberg MVP LC bolt action in 308. It sits in a chassis and has a AR style stock. It only has a 1/4” rubber butt pad. It weighs in at 14lbs so it’s not a lightweight. It doesn’t have a muzzle brake but does have a threaded barrel.
I bought a thicker rubber pad but it didn’t fit.
I’ve heard of recoil reducing stocks that have a spring inside to help Anyone have one?
25 shots yesterday and my shoulder is all bruised up

Muzzle brakes will help......but also help make it louder. One of my shotguns has an ISIS recoil pad and it's a game changer. I don't think they make a setup for a rifle. Have you searched for any?

I’ve looked a little. Found Limbsaver pads but they don’t fit the Magpul stock.
I did look at a muzzle brake but they are loud
The isis system is for solid wood stocks

I assume you are shooting off a bench, which directs all the recoil energy into your rigid forward leaning shooting shoulder, instead of different stances allowing the energy to be spread throughout your body or dealt with by movement of the torso.

To reduce recoil you add weight to the gun, add a muzzle brake, or go with lighter ammo or smaller caliber (6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm 08).

back in the 80s and 90s there used to be a harts recoil reduction system for the 1911 which consisted of a tube filled with mercury and steel bearing inserted in place of the guide rod. Never tried it but it was all the rage for a while. I imagine there were the similar things put into the stock of a rifle.

I only shoot lead bullets out of my 308 MVP. I use it as a 200 yard plinking gun. Mine is still in the factory stock configuration. The 160 grain pills are not moving as fast as jacketed bullets so I don’t get a lot of felt recoil.

My bench rest 30-06 rifle weighs in at 17 pounds has a healthy sized recoil pad, the weight makes it pleasant to shoot 168 HPBT at 2950 FPS.

It brought it down to the recoil of a 556 maybe? The problem with it is alot of the concussion comes back at the shooter. For a bolt action that would be ok since it's not high volume but after 100 rounds I'd have a headache. And of course it makes the perceived report louder but you won't get around that with any comp or brake. If you have a 5/8-24 thread pitch and are interested you can have it for karma. I'll even send you the accu-washer set. I'll just have to dig it up. If interested send me your info.

Yup. They all will. Anytime you direct the gases anywhere out of the straight path of the muzzle you will also divert the concussion. Depending on the geometry and size of the orifices you will get more or less concussion and effectiveness. The one I offered happens to be extreme. So more concussion but more effectiveness.

I put a suppressor on my Xbolt .308, made a huge difference….but yeah.

Look at limbsaver grind to fit recoil pads. Buy slightly oversized and grind (sand) to fit profile. I have done this on several 50 cal muzzle loaders that were punishing and it really helped

put some weight on the front of the rifle to balance it, will also tame recoil. My 308 runs 19 lbs balanced in a chassis. My long range load 168 g Hornady HPBT.

I hand load Sierra 110 HP for soft recoiling load. Good to 300 yards. You can shoot all day in t shirt comfortably.

Brakes do not direct gases directly back at the shooter. Most are angled so the shooter at an adjacent bench will get the new hairdo. Vatious models have porting in different directions incluilding the top to lessen muzzle rise. I also run radial brakes sending gases 90° to the barrel, saving adjacent shooters. A brake on a 6.5 or 6 will make it possible to shoot all day with little to no soreness.

Barnes Bullets recommends using lighter Bullets than you normally use when using solid Copper over jacketed bullets as they retain 100% weight. additionally loading them with minimal charges, even experimenting with charges associated with lesser cartridges such as the .300 Savage...If you normally use a 150gr. Factory .308, a 130gr, 300 Savage load would be soft, accurate, and plenty to kill a Deer sized animal out to 300yds.

I'd hold off on all the other gizmos and gadgets until you see what just a brake will do. It may be all you need. These things are just to dampen the force that goes into your shoulder (felt recoil). Not actually reducing the recoil itself.

I have a Russian M44 (7.62x54R) that's been shortened to a 17" Barrel: People will pack their shit and leave when you start shooting it...at least the BMG and Lapua have long barrels that put the blast well ahead of the Bench.

I think that may have been the issue with the m4-72 brake on my RFB and getting headaches after extended shooting. It has an 18 inch barrel but being a bullpup it's not much longer than my aks-74u. On an AR 10 or something normal length I'm sure it would be much more pleasant.

Well thanks to gun_slinger_boy’s generosity of sending me a M4-72 from precision armament muzzle brake this rifle is enjoyable to shoot again. Shot 30 rounds today and no shoulder pain. I just can’t have anything light weight on the table. The blast from this brake clears the table
