My parents place has a creek running down the edge of it and to the one side is a field with deer traffic that heads to the other side of the creek. I’ve hunted both sides and yesterday I found a great area to hunt.
The other side of the creek I found an area that had 3-4 deer beds and I’d say 10-12 dropping piles. I set up there for the afternoon but saw nothing. There’s a logging road but lots of cover in the middle of the creek but I can’t hunt that because it’s too close to houses and very very very thick. just upwind from the bed down and dropping area there were two buck scrapes one fresh and one I’d guess a few weeks old.
I’m thinking next weekend head out there and hunt that area. The issue is I either have to walk right by both areas or hunt up wind of them and my scent would head right to where the deer are hanging out. If I choose to try to bypass it I have to walk through some really thick brush and that would be tough and loud. I can likely hang in the creek depression and hunt that to avoid scent contamination and then I can glass the thickets in that area since that should be far enough from the other residence. I know there’s a mix of buck(s) and doe there so what scents if any would you use? This is in a valley and I could hunt the top of the ridge but I’d have to walk through the forest and doubt it would be quiet. Lots of hills, sticks, brush, and springs/swampy areas.
I can walk pretty quietly in the creek bed or the logging road but both are close 10-15 yards from the area where the deer bed down. I’d love some fresh fluffy snow but that won’t happen. There are leaves on the logging road so that’s a concern. The creek is only a few inches deep and I can walk in that no problem.
Thoughts please. I’m on the right track and this would be my first deer. I have a doe tag and want to fill one or the other. There’s a lot of deer in this area not much pressure and I have only heard two shots on this block of land.
