Is an unmodified Saiga .223 with 5 round detatchable mag legal for deer in nys? Also is FMJ legal on deer here? (talking about full power 7.62, not the .223)

Yes and yes. I wouldn't use 7.62x51 FMJ on a deer. I'm sure it'll kill most of the time but with the abundance of hunting rounds (even a cheap cup/core spire point is better), why would you?

7.62x51 would be a lot better than a .223

if i remember right , FMJ is not really allowed .. i think DEC says it has to be a expanding bullet ... ie soft point , hollow , plain lead ..

Sagia rifles are available in 7.62x 39, .223 and 7.62x 51.
Don't think they are available in 7.62x54R.

For hunting, use soft point or hollow point.
